I'm looking or a replacement cam assembly to work with auto hubs, like the one circled in this picture. Would AutoZone, Napa, etc. have this? Can't seem to find it on AutoZone's website, but I may be looking in the wrong place.
Also, my four wheel drive seems to not have as much "grab" as it did - nothing is clicking as far as I can hear, and the hubs are cleaned and look good, would a failing (or failed?) shift motor cause that?

Check out ebay. you should be able to get a whole auto hub assy (both sides) for like $35 - ish...

Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms, but I can't seem to find anything.

might not be any up right now, but that can change day to day. Look under rangers 93-97 and explorers 91-94.

You have the (4405 t-case) control trac system. Read your owners manual on how this system operates.

Your shift motor has absolutely nothing to do with how your 4wd operates except to switch the t-case from high to low and back again, nothing more.

The plastic cam can only be purchased with the rest of the hub from any business.
Autozone and the likes, do not sell these. E-bay is a good source for expensive new hubs.

I have seen private individuals sell the cams on E-bay, but only once in a blue moon.
Junkyards are a good source for these hubs. Call a few, and ask how much they want for a set. I remember getting a set for $35 at a JY.

junk yards are probably your best bet. Idk what $ they run at junk yards but i got my set of used explorer manual hubs for $45 off ebay. At the time there were at least a dozen manual and about 6 auto hubs being sold by the same guy, and a few others by other people for more $.

gman, I believe that the 4405 case came only in Explorers, his 96 Ranger should have a 1354.

nfazer, why do you want to replace that one piece? Is it visibly broken? Are you sure nothing else is wrong with the hub(s)? The auto hubs are weak to start with, and yours are now 14 years old. If you can afford it, why not get a new set, or better yet, a new set of manual hubs.

DOH! My bad! I stand corrected. I was thinking his rig was an EX. Sorry for that.

I agree on the manual hub conversion. I did it, and love the stronger hub. I know they are going to work when I need them.

If you'll look at the picture in this post, the "teeth" if you will that I have circled in read, are totally broken on both cams on my truck. If I understand how the hubs work, basically they rest against those "teeth" when the 4 wheel drive is engaged; no "teeth", no 4 wheel drive. I've taken apart my hubs as far as I can without a press, cleaned them, and did the "spacer" tutorial I found here on ExplorerForum to build up where the plastic ring inside the hub may have deteriorated. I feel that they are in decent shape now, however with that cam broken on both sides, I really have no way to test them. I figured if I could find those cams for ~$30-$40, I can try that before dropping $250 for Warn manuals (which I plan to do, eventually). I don't do heavy off roading, I just need 4 wheel drive for snowy and icy days on paved roads.

Indeed it does! Thanks again. Any mod feel free to lock/close/delete thread.

As I figured, the cams ended up working; four wheel drive works, for now!

93 Explorer sport - auto 4x4 - missing garter spring on front passenger hub

I had an issue this past weekend when I attempted to replace the front passenger's caliper and brake hose. It seems that the 18 year old brake line was a bit too rusted and it cracked. Needless to say it took me a collection of evenings to replace the line and get the whole thing back in order.
As I was doing the changes, I noticed that the wheel had a bit of play, so I decided that since the auto hub and wheel were out, I should tighten the wheel bearing adjusting nut. This requires to remove the plastic Cam Assembly including its two retaining garter springs. One of the springs jumped away somewhere on the grass so when I put everything back only one spring was placed. A couple of days later I found the missing garter spring - and unfortunately it was chewed up. Must have been the lawn mower. Anyhow, does anyone know this part number or where to find a replacement? will the Cam Assembly work properly with only one garter spring retainer?
I appreciate anyone's tip.
Should I look for replacement or used auto hubs for sale on e-bay? All I need is the retaining garter spring.

Thanks fellow Enthusiasts!
