Precisely what I was getting at.That's the truth!! I got charged £280 just "to have a look", they told me what I already knew and then wanted to charge me £1800 plus vat to take the engine out, a further £2500 to fix it and another £1800 to put it back in again... when it could've been repaired in situ.
For further confirmation, I got a price for a replacement power steering pump from my local Ford dealership, just in case I needed one when I had the problem described above. Their quote was £600.00 for the new pump plus £200.00 to fit it - plus VAT at 20% on the lot. Thus, almost £1000.00 just to replace a little power steering pump on a car worth, at best, £1800.00. Now that, surely, is taking the piss.
I had a quote for a factory rebuilt pump at £120.00 and secondhand pumps were available for just a few quid.
Fortunately, I did not actually need the pump but it was an interesting exercise - and a timely reminder to carefully avoid using Ford dealerships for Explorer parts.
Regards
Mike
P.S. Good luck with this one, Simon. Based on my own experience with this very same work, I feel sure you will be okay having it done by Justin.
