Both those alternators are for the OHV V6. The SOHC uses a different one (and the same one as the 5.0 V8). HINT: SOHC V6 was introduced in 1997. Both those applications listed V6 Explorers from 1991/1992 onwards (OHV was the only one available from 1991-1996).

That should work. The wiring connections are different(on top), and the two lower mounting bolts are spaced differently from the OHV.

Got it ordered, I'll let you know if it fits once it arrives, thanks everyone.

OHV was available in the Explorer up to 2001;)

Actually, only 2000, but I meant the OHV was the only Explorer engine available earlier on. Actually 1991-1995. In '96 the V8 came out followed by SOHC in '97.

My Dad picked up a 4.0L OHV from Bob out of a 2001. I checked on rockauto and they list a OHV as an engine option for 2001 also.

That's odd. I found factory specs for all Explorers and posted them a few weeks ago and it showed only SOHC and V8 available in 2001 from a number of sources. I guess the odd OHV must've snuck out there but it wasn't listed as factory spec in the '01 model year.

EDIT: In that Edmunds article I mention in my sig, they say:

"2001 was a mixed bag for the Explorer. The four-door received the 205-horsepower, 4.0-liter, OHC V6 as standard, as both the former base engine (the 160-horse V6) and the five-speed manual gearbox were dropped. The addition of child seat-tether anchors in the second row was the only other change for this Explorer".

I found quite a few other sources that confirmed that as well. Every once in a while you see/hear of Explorers that buck the "standard spec" trend so OHVs may have been out there after all in the 2001 model year. Might want to check the VIN on that engine to see if it really was 2001.

I will check it next time I head that way for sure.
