My brother's turning 16 in July and we're getting him a car. $3,000 + whatever money he wants to put down ($0 ;)). He wants an older Toyota Pickup w/ big arse tires (big meaning ~40's, I told him he was crazy too :p). What should we look for? He wants one already built and I'm wondering if that's a good idea? Thanks for your input!

4runner? i saw a nice lifted one today on black 20s with 33" BFG off-road tires. looked nice.

Oops, forgot to say, he thinks SUV's are teh ghey :D 33's are too small in his opinion. He wants 37+.

Let him buy one and do the lift/tires himself. He has you to ask how to do it. He will know how to maintain his own vehicles the rest of his life. Thats how most of us older guys started (me anyway). If I couldn't fix it (keep it fixed), I rode the bus.

I know kids who can't change a tire or check the oil in their fancy cars their parents buy them around here.

IDK about the prices in WA, but down here the prices of Toyotas doesn't really drop off that much. There was an 84(?) reg. cab that had a pretty beat up bed, ~6" lift, 4x4, and 33x12.50r15 GY MTR's. The thing still wound up selling for $2000 or $2500. I doubt you'd be able to find any Toyota pickup in anywhere near decent condition for $3000. Especially one with a lift and big tires. I am not even that sure on how strong the early 'Yota straight axles are. I doubt that they'd be able to handle over 35s, but I could be wrong.

Thanks guys. I showed him this thread and he thinks you're all "jealous" of big tires. He WILL NOT learn how to fix or even work on his truck. My mom would end up paying for repairs. Since it's really up to her, I doubt she'll let him buy a beater with 38" tires. Thanks again for the help.

I probably should not say this, but I feel sorry for your mom.

I hear that! He's the wannabe rockstar w/ the same kinda attitude. I doubt he'll end up with a big Toyota and if he does I'm sure he'll cause lots of damage.

It's not the first time someone's said that. She's let it go on too long so it's pretty unfixable. When he's 18 he'll get a painful wakeup call ;)

My brother was/is the same way (sort of). He fixes his stuff, but mom and dad still help him financially and hes 27. They just put an exhaust system and new turn light on his wifes car.

If he wants a Yota for offroad pruposes the best years IMO are 84-85. This is the years that the 22RE (damn near indestructable engines) first appeared, and the last 2 years of the solid front axle. The Land Cruiser maintained the SFA up untill recently, but is a rather large SUV. :D

God I hate that! If you're not living on your own the least you can do is not get married! A co-worker of mine has 2 brothers in the Philippines. Both are in their late 20's, living with mom, with wives. I heard back in the day this was unheard of.

He has a home of his own....just is always short on cash for some reason.

That's not so bad then.

Yeah, I am the good son and the one that fixes everything :D My brother says he's getting a job this summer, said the same last summer (;)) but refuses to cut his long ratsnest hair. I like where this thread is going :p He's like the nonconformist type but is falling into all the little fads without realizing it

I bought my second car at 16. My first at 14. My first job was a paper route at 12. I worked and paid for every car I have ever owned. If I couldn't fix them, I didn't drive. That was my parents rule for me. I am very happy they did this for me. I was able to buy a home at 21 (20% down-in cash). Its paid for now. :D

I quickly learned maitenance and how "not to treat one". I also started collecting craftsman tools at that age. ;)

My brother has never paid for one completely yet. My parents have bought 3 of his outright for him. He has not learned to take care of himself and his wife. I don't think he will until they pull the plug (financially).

Tell him that he's correct (for me at least). I am jealous that all but one of my friends with trucks/jeeps have between 32s, 33s, 35s, or 38s. I only have 31s right now. :(

I don't want big tires (EVER!!!). I would roll it in a heartbeat. My old ranger has been on two wheels (on-road) more times than I care to remember. It not fun looking at pavement out the door glass.

I don't have a sway bar in the rear, and have driven without one on in the front. It wasn't all that bad. When I SAS, I will be on 35s or 37s with about 7-8" of lift. When ever I do something to my truck that changes handling(remove sway bars, add lift, bigger tires, etc.) I just have to realize that it isn't a sports car and I adjust my driving style accordingly.
