Whining during Accelaration

Two weeks ago, I noticed a whining noise during acceleration. Took it to the shop and they found a bad pulley tensioner, replaced it and I had them go ahead and put a new serpentine belt on since I'm at 95,000 and they had the old one off anyway. They also did an inspection and recommended lower ball joint replacement soon.

Still hear a whining noise, during accelaration. When I do hear it, it seems to change pitch with accelaration. Higher pitch during harder acceleration, etc. I took it back, they checked the other pulleys, etc and didn't find a problem. They drove it and thought it might be a 'transmission pump'.

Took it to the transmission shop that installed new torque converter and solenoide last fall (actually a second converter, the first one they installed was bad, which I could tell from the get go, but they couldn't tell until it had problems unlocking). They don't hear the whining noise. I can hear it easily, but especially with steady acceleration up light grades. They told me to keep driving, bring it back if it doesn't go away. I can't blame them for not wanting to tear into it, not knowing exactly what's wrong with it. Nor do I want to leave it for 3-4 days. Only one tranny shop in town and they're busy.

It seems to be worse when the car is cold, and or ambient temperature is cold. It shifts fine.

If it's another bad torque converter, will it ruin the transmission if it goes to long without being repaired? Is there some way to tell it's a bad converter without taking it out?

Are there other suggestions for what the noise could be?

does it change with RPMs, or is it strictly speed based?

I can hear it at all speeds, usually at 'cruising' speed whatever that may be. If I really punch the accelerator it goes away.

sounds like the rear end or bad wheel bearings.

Haven't had it, but read many times that accel whine is from the rear end

This sounds like its more engine or transmissions based than an axle or wheel bearing. aA rear end growl wouldn't go away if you mat the throttle nor would a wheel bearing.

If the torque converter is self detonating there could be metal shaving inside the converter and could get into the transmission but I think its more of the transmission pump as well. Take it back and see if they can check the pressure in the transmission. Its easily done with the truck on the lift.
