For the last year or so my '98 XLT has a very loud whirring noise coming from the front. It typically occurs when I'm not accelerating... no matter what the speed. When at a stop, I can usually quickly tap the gas or shift to neutral to stop the noise. Any ideas?

Is it low or high pitched? My dad's 96 would do that sometimes, but it was low pitched. More like a moaning sound. It had something to do with the intake. My 98 does have sort of a higher-pitched whirring sound coming from behind the dash. It almost sounds like the heater fan. Come to think of it, I think that is what it is. I also have a problem I am trying to solve right now where air blows from the drivers side floor vent. It blows harder the faster I go, and only when the heat controls are off. I think what may be happening in my case is when the outside air comes in, it rotates the heater fan. I don't know if either of these is your problem, but I hope this helps.

Nancy, it may just be the IAC (idle air controller). It can be cleaned. Run search for How to clean IAC and you should find the thread with pictures. It's a 15 minute job.
