Whirring noise in rear

Rear noise

I finally took this 03 to a repair shop. They rebuilt the rear differential to the tune of over $1,100.00 The vehicle service contract covered all but the diagnosis and $100 deductable. Cost me $180 out of pocket.

Still making noise so I took it back. They agreed it was the rear wheel bearings. I purchased cheap bearings on E-Bay. The shop knows me well so they reluctantly agreed to install them. The R/H bearing went out within a month. The E-Bay seller warrantied the bearing. Then the left one went out. I chose to let the repair shop install a hub and bearing assembly from Timken. $187 for the bearing and $180 to install it. Noise gone. Now how long will the r/h last this time.

The moral is YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. The cheap China crap just doesn't last. 20/20 hindsight. Since I was a technican I should know better but I made that gamble and lost.

I've probably spent as much in labor on the cheap bearings as it would have to do it right the first time. :(

Well good thing you're getting everything taken care of.

And if you don't mind me asking, who is the mechanical breakdown insurance through?

The mechanical breakdown is through AA Auto. Seemed like a good deal at the time. But now I'm not so sure it's the best. Maybe there are no others that are any better?

What's the mileage on your '03?

$180 out of pocket for an $1,100 repair is not bad at all, considering the age of the vehicle. Of course, that depends on what your monthly premium is...

I'm starting to get the variable whine (goes away when I have my foot just touching the gas). Not looking forward to $1,100 for the rebuild OR taking on a new car payment to replace the truck!
