I looked back in my file and found a special service message 11223.

#11223 "If a whistle is emanating from the trottle body on some 1998 explorer/mountaineer vehicles, please compare to a similar vehicle under similar circumstances (indentical idle RPM) to determine the conern is product characteristic. Due to production tolerance variations, some vechicles may exhibit the noise to a greater or lesser degree than others, but a whistle will occur. this is a product characteristic of throttle bodies and is caused by airflow across the metal edge of the throttle plates and ICA (idle air control) valve".

Does anyone have any additional information (like how to eliminate the noise)? I can not understand how Ford engineered this system and now accepts the results as "product characteristic".

I have a 96 xlt OHV,,there is a howling noise coming from the throttle body area,,,this happen after cleaning the IAC.can anyone help?

I have a 96 XLT, and since I have been in AZ, where the temp gets above 100, mine just whistles away if I am not on the throttle. When it gets the throttle, it goes away. If the temp outside drops below 100, it stops. I haven't taken it to Ford, not under warranty. I will be leaving AZ in less than a month so I am not going to bother with it unless it starts back up when I get to NC. Sorry, but I don't have a fix, just wanted to let you guys know what I have noticed with my X.

longtall,

recently i've experienced the same noise on my 96 sprt. However the noise is coming from the MAS not the TB. It happens under the same conditions as yours (high temp and idle). I haven't investigated beyond this point yet but i plan to.
