I posted this in the interior sub forum and got 45 looks with no response so I closed that thread and I'm posting it here:

I have an '02 XLT and would really like white face gauges. I've been looking at the "stick-on" overlays and the Mountaineer clusters. Are there any other options? How good are the overlays? Are they worth it or should I replace the whole cluster with a Mountaineer cluster? If I do go with the overlays, how difficult is it to see the white needles on the white background during the day? Thanks for looking in and I look forward to your replies.

Thanks -- Rondo

My thoughts- aftermarket stick-ons never have quite the same look as the factory ones. They seem to have some "afterthought" nuances, like weird cutouts, uneven lighting, "grains" in the lighting due to adhesive either left over or applied when swapping faces, number alignment, or stuff like ice blue lights when those lights won't match anything else on your dash.

I'd go stock, but I'm a bit of a wierd scenario when it comes to mods.

Oh- and I don't own a Gen III anymore. :)

Thanks Joe. I don't want it to look like crap, I want it to look like it belongs.

Have a Merry Christmas!!!

How difficult is this to do? I just read this and looked for a cluster on ebay to see what they look like and I like the white faces. Might consider this swap.

Is the mileage stored in the memory of the cluster or somewhere else? Can I replace my non-message center cluster with a memory center cluster and still be okay?

As far as I know the mileage is stored in the PCM not in the cluster. This thread is a good read: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218636

Thanks. Read that over and may have to think on this a little more.

Sometimes stock is good.

Stock works... :)

Like the aftermarket ones above- I'm incredibly OCD about my stuff, I know I'd have a hard time with having aqua cluster lights when the rest fo the truck is green.

The needles are also hard to see during the day, I had my old white needles on my sport cluster in my '95 (someone pulled them out at the junkyard) before I found a new sport cluster with the orange needles. Much better...

Not cutting anyone's choices, just relating my views and experience I think...

Stock it is! I believe a Mountaineer cluster is pretty much a direct swap. What about a Sport or Sport Trac cluster? :dunno:

Nope, the Sport/ST clusters are derivatives of the Gen II cluster. Not positive if the newer 2006+ ST clusters changed at all, but they're a whole different beast with the Gen IV Explorer...

Good to know. Thanks Joe!

White cluster

I successfully transplanted a white gauge cluster from a 2001 Sport Trac, into our '01 XLT, it appears white during the day with orange needles, and during the night it appears stock green, with lighted orange needles, can't even tell its white! I only have my phone camera and the horrible pics don't do justice. I'll get clear pics posted soon.

I'm not sure it worked because it was the same year (features and what-not) from the x to the sport trac, that allowed it to work, or if the previous owner applied a stick-on? Not sure, but if it is an after market sticker, its damn good!

Standing by for the pics..........................

Here are the pics, I also installed a trans temp sensor (gauge on column), and I'm working on the write up for that. I'm still not sure if the sport trac came factory, or if I got lucky at the bone yard, and someone already modified the cluster with a stick-on.. I hope this helps..

You can swap the gear indicator as well, that way your cluster will match entirely...

I used the '01 cluster on my '00, but swapped the black trim rings in place of the silver one from the '01 so the color matched a little better.

I think I'm going to swap it back to the black gauges this weekend though, so if anyone wants one...

Rondo- there is a 2003 Mounty at the junkyard, I'm going tomorrow... If I have time, I can probably pull it out of the truck...

Joe, sorry I didn't see this until now. My Ex does not have the message center so I would like to get a cluster without the message center.

My concern is the lights on the dash for 4x4 mode. I have an '02 XLT with auto 4x4 so I have a light on the dash for 4x4 high and a light for 4x4 low. I believe the Mounty only came as 2WD or AWD. Some people have found the Mounty clusters with the 4x4 lights. Check out post #28 in this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218636

What's your thoughts on the 4x4 lights?

Purchased a Mounty cluster from rocket2ya. Looks like all the lights are in the correct position. I'm hoping we get some good weather so I can get it installed. I will update this thread when I do. Stay tuned...............

I do have an update.

I installed the cluster and it looked awesome!!:thumbsup: The indicator lights are all correct and working. The problem is that the LED display is dim and the mileage is incorrect. So I took it out and will put it back in after I fix the LED display using the same fix I did for my original cluster by following this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217490

Here are some pics I took with my cell phone of the cluster installed:

I will take some better pics with my camera and post more info when the LED display is fixed and the cluster gets re-installed.
