I didn't have my bike for long and I don't know much about working on them but I would like to try fixing it myself. its a 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan 500. Yesterday I came back from riding it and it fell over sitting in my driveway while I was opening the garage and taking off my helmet. :( I don't know if the kickstand didn't lock in place or what happend. It sucks that I got a dent in the gas tank but I can live with that since I bought the bike used and it already had a dent from something being dropped on the front fender. My problem is that the shifter got bent so I pulled it back out a little and now I can only get in first gear and neutral. I'm going to have a friend look at it that works on dirt bikes a lot but i could use any extra help if someone here has any other ideas about it.

Try tensioning the cable by turning the adjusting barrel that is butted against the lever. Try this both ways, slack and tension.

Good Luck, that is a tough brake..

If you're talking about the foot operated shifter lever, you may have bent the internal shifting mechanism :( If you bent the clutch lever, then what he said :D

The clutch still works. It was the shift lever that got bent. I was looking at the linkage from the shifter to the trans and couldn't see anything where it was getting stuck so it probably is something internal that broke. I hope this is something I can get fixed and do a little more riding before I go back to school.
