Who's been verbally assaulted by Land Rover owners?

Up at GWNF back in November I had a chance to see a Disco tackle the Dictum Rock. This rock is about waist high with a "bypass" that requires you to lean your truck against a shaky tree. Anyways, the guy driving was really cool and seemed to know a lot about his truck. He also appeared to have a lot of money, because he scratched his truck up on the rock and the tree and turning around to come back down the rock he smashed the hell out of his bumper. I was convinced of the Disco's ability to off-road, but that doesn't mean I would ever buy one...

Here is a pic of that Disco on the Dictum rock...

We probably wouldn't be so upset about people like that, if us Explorer people would get more respect in the first place.

You've got a point there.

aren't Camel trophies held, every year?

They were, but not anymore! '98 was the last year for the Camel Trophy. Land Rover withdrew under BMW ownership as sponsor. Now, under Ford, they try to re-invent the event with their I think it's called "G4 Challange".

BTW, the Camel Trophy was not just held in South Amerika as stated by GU marcel, but also in Malaysia/Borneo ('81,'82,'85,'88,'93 and '96), Africa ('83, '87 and '91), Australia ('86), Sibiria ('90), Central America ('95) and South America ('80,'84,'89,'92 and '94). In the year 2000, there was a kind of Camel Trophy with Honda as sponsor, but it did not work out well.

Don't subestimate the Discos and the old Rangies. But agree: There is nothing like a Defender :D

Well, then try a used Disco or Classic Range for between $5'000 to $10'000. I agree that Defenders are completely overpriced as there are just very few here. But a Disco 1 and the Classic Range has basicly the same frame and drivetrain, just a little more body on the chassis and a different wheelbase 100" vs. 90/110 for the Defender ;)

Hello all! So my i start out first the pictures you see. Yes I am stuck, my MUD tires are like slicks so i got no traction. My friends jeep with 32 got stuck in the same spot before me. I have 235/70 on there, I could upgrade to 265/75, however I have no money after I payed for the lift, so I lack the funds to pay for new tires. And no my 'daddy' doesn't pay for taht stuff i do. Also the picture you alude to me as trying to flex, yes it is a bad shot. First off my sway bars are connected and that limited my flex by a lot, I also didn't do it right that time. And I was by no means attacking him, I had a question for him that is it, I wanted to understand why exactly.

And I am 18 with a rover yes. My dad bought it in 1995 since he had always wanted one from his militray days. When I turned 16 I did get it. My father wanted me to have a nice car, so he gave it to me. The car is only worth about 8-10k now and in great condition.

Thank you donkey boy for sticking up for what i did say. I do not know everything about wheeling and trucks, but i do about it. But I am still learning. I am going to be getting rid of the discovery in about 6 months to get a d-90.

And I will talk to anyone who wants to, but jamiejaymo, how old are you. Saying I am gay because my truck is red and the top three gay cars are VW, Disco, and Audi. That is extremely childish. If you are going to be an ass then don't waste my time please.

Peace
Marcel

The reason that I posted the pics was at the moment I was pissed because people always disrespect our SUVs and say that they are soccer mom trucks and worthless off-road. A rover is built from the factory to perform well off road in stock form, although an Explorer may need to to built a little bit, it can still stay with or in some cases outperform your rover. I think that a lot of times, the Rover and Jeep drivers have the same complex where they think that their trucks are the best and nothing else can compete and it is unfortunate. What I gathered from what I read of yours and sections conversation was that you were trying to be sarcastic and make a mockery out of having a lifted Explorer. I guess when you put up with it for years, you tend to be a little edgy about things like this. If I assumed the wrong thing, sorry, I am just goin by what I read.

I saw this thread, and I just had to relply! I drive an 89 Range Rover and my Dad drives a 2001 Discovery. Let me start of by saying that I am by no means a rich *****, and I have paid for the majority of my vehicle, and all the modifications. Land Rovers are not all that expensive, everybody just thinks they are.

I think that it is cool that you guys are modifying your Explorers, it is definately a rare thing.

But as far as Rovers go, in stock form they are are one of the most capable brands made. A few weeks ago, I drove a new Range Rover, Discovery, and Freelander threw stuff that I think no other stock vehicle could make it through besides a Gelaendewagen. The capabilities of these things amaze me.

As far as the aluminium goes, it keeps the weight low, and keeps a low COG. When I get a scratch I don't have to worry about it rusting, and the aluminium is pretty stout. Land Rovers pretty much have the strongest SUV frames made. Like on the Discovery, Defender, and pre '03 Range Rovers.

You guys complain about the heavy weight? Well that comes from having SOLID axles front and rear, along with the super strong frame. I will have to say that the engine doesn't have the most power, but it is a proven design, and has done well for Rover for the past 33 years.

You talk about RTI? Hmmm...Check the Four Wheeler records and see what vehicle has the highest stock RTI score...Yup, it is a Land Rover Discovery II. Scoring in the mid 700's not to much touches it, except for ofcourse other Land Rover vehicles.

As far as the Camel goes, it is considered to have been the Olympics of off-road driving. The vehicles got seriously abused, but most made it through with out to many problems. The only mods the vehicles had were heavy duty springs (to cope with all the expedition weight), snorkel, roof rack, winch, Michelin mud tires and underbody protection. Stock drive train, engine, tranny etc...

Donkey,
I am glad to see that you know about Rovers!

As far as ride goes...Well I think they ride pretty good. Considering solid axles, I think they ride excellent. I know the IFS does great on road, but unless it is moddified a lot it's not so hot off-road. For the '03 Range Rover, it recieved fully independant suspension, but off-road it acts like a solid axle. There are air valves that conect the air bags together. For example, when the right drivers side wheel gets pushed up, the air in it air bag on that side goes to the airbag on the passenger side, thus immitating a solid axle. What other manufacturers have gone to these lengths to retain off-road ability while still having excellent street manners?

As far as Ford owning Land Rover...Well that is not so good. Ford wants volume...Thus they cater to the soccer Moms. Hince the new X having Fully Independant Suspension. I would hate to see Land Rover hoared out just so Ford's wallet can get that much fatter. Ford has very little care for what Rovers can do off-road, and Land Rover's heritage as an excellent off-road vehicle.

You say, "Why would you take a $40,000 vehicle off-road?" Well why not? Taking a vehicle four wheeling doesn't meen beating the living crap out of it, a decent driver can get a stock Rover in some pretty nasty places, and come out without a dent. Plus, Land Rovers are well designed for off-roading. Each Land Rover dealership host off-road events for its customers. While they are by no means "hard core," the events teach the basics of off-roading, and have gotten many involved with four wheeling. I can't qoute an exact percentage, but it has been calculated that Land Rover owners take their vehicles off-road more than any other SUV owners. This has to say something about the vehicles right?

I know that GU Marcel's approach wasn't the most couth, but his questions were valid. Fell free to IM me at Trekboyy5

Well I am sorry if i did come across sarcastic, I was very curious. I never really thought about anyone actually lifting their explore and such so i was interested. I will always go wheeling with any vehicle. If you want to go for the 'snobby' crowd just look at the H2s... And I would like to thank Randell for a nice conversation and trying to be nice. Thank you much.

Marcel

Glad to hear about you paying for yer own !!!!!

Sorry, if I offended you about not paying for yours. I was mistaken. I just know too many people who get their life handed over to them on a silver plater, with all the trimmings, then go around berated everyone else. Sorry, I hope you don't think too bad of us!!:D

jaws i will admit my father gave me the truck and he does pay for my gas so i am givein a lot, but i pay for all my mods and such. And I don't go around berating others

dang. i typed a really long reply. it was so good too. then one of dogs ran by and snagged the power cable from the computer (its brand new so all the cords are still just hanging out everywhere). lost it all. i'm not retyping it either.

here's the cliff's notes version:

chapter 1: gumarcel.. sorry about all the backlash you got originally. we get a lot crap from other vehicle owners. we don't expect someone to actually be asking a question to hear an answer.

chapter 2: i don't really care if parents buy their kids good stuff. when i have kids.. i'm gonna buy them good stuff. i'd rather them be in an accident in a new bmw than a 80 corolla. and yes.. i paid for everything when i was a kid.

chapter 3: explorers aren't out of the box trail conquerers (is that a word?). ive put about $1200 into mine which includes: rear locker, 5 33" mudders, 5" worth of lift, skid plates, communications stuff, trail gear/equipment, tow points, shocks, spare parts, etc.. etc.. i'm pretty happy with my vehicle can do. it hasn't let me down yet.

chapter 4: there is a very nice rover in my town. mudders, winch, etc. i'd offroad it.

Damn you paid only 1200 for all that?! My lift alone was about 800, along with 300 for skid plate and diff guards. Man I feel like i got ripped off, maybe i should get an explorer! :D

If it is a white one, he is one of my brothers good friends and lives in my neighborhood. I am tryin to get my brother to talk to him about goin to Tellico, he has an ARB bumper, Enough lift for 33" Procomp MTs, and a 9k lb warn (which is toast, he may have gotten a new one).

ewww, arb front bumpers are horrible!!

well my lift consists of a 3" body lift (cheap but helps clear the 33s!) at about $140 and 2" in suspension lift (torsion bar twist and extended shackles) at about $45. technically there is 1.5" more due to the increase in tire size.. but that is part of the tire price.
the susp lifts for my truck would be around $1500 not including new drive shaft if needed. too much for my blood! i'll go SAS before i pay that.

skid plates are factory. i just had to buy them afterward b/c ford quit putting them on standard in 97 i think. got both from a junkyard for $75.

i have no diff guards.

you didn't get ripped off. 800 doesn't sound that bad for a real lift. and yeah .. you should get an X. we need more explorer wheelers so people quit looking at us crazy....

btw.. do rovers come with lockers standard? i was thinking they did. that'd be nice.

No problem ;)
I was just about to post here and say that a had a rather nice conversation with GU Marcel, and that I thought most of the explorer guys were just overreacting. Glad to see that you came in here to defend yourself. And once again, I'd like to apoligize for some of the other explorer guys that weren't as nice to you through IM's. Next time I'm near Indiana we'll hook up and wheel.

Jason, the 94-99 Disco series I had a locking center diff, however in the Disco Series II, which is 99-03 does not have one. They have some stupid electronic thingy. However you can retrofit a knob that goes next the the transfer case that will give you the center diff lock. NAS discos are the only ones i believe who don't have the CDL. And I don't think a bilizin stickers is that bad, i have about 11 on my car. I try to get to word out and give some of the places i bought stuff at some furture clients. And Mudd that was a very nice conversation. And anyone in indiana or near who would want to go wheeling let me know, it would be fun. If any ofyou do, just drop me an e-mail...gumarcel@aol.com
