Who's been verbally assaulted by Land Rover owners?

oh i agree.. i have that many on my truck. they are all pretty small though. most are mtn biking related. you'd really have to see this one to know what i mean though. it is overboard. in all honesty.. it looks likes sponsored truck in a rally. that in itself made it look cool the first time i saw it.. but once you realize its just a guy who wheels.. it looks a little less cool. the guy really can't see out of his windows or half the paint b/c there are so many. despite this.. it is still a very nice looking truck. you'd have to see it. i keep a digi cam in my truck now so i'll snap one of it next time i see it.

and thanks for the locker info. i knew they had the locking center at one time!

IMHO bad idea! The cheapest D-90 you find in the states go for 20'000 to 25'000, which is ridiculous. I paid in '98 in Switzerland $ 24'000 for a brand spanking new Defender 110 CSW Td5

As far as the Camel goes, it is considered to have been the Olympics of off-road driving. The vehicles got seriously abused, but most made it through with out to many problems. The only mods the vehicles had were heavy duty springs (to cope with all the expedition weight), snorkel, roof rack, winch, Michelin mud tires and underbody protection. Stock drive train, engine, tranny etc...

All car manufacturers inspect/test each engine before the put it into the vehicle. The engines have to achieve a min hp and torque; otherwise it gets rejected so clients don't complain about having a too weak engine. I'm not sure if Land Rover did it in all years, but in the early 90ies, Land Rover used rejected engines for the Camel Discos. So engine-wise, they were even below stock, but for driving in low box, it does not really mather if the engine misses some horses.

As far as Ford owning Land Rover...Well that is not so good. Ford wants volume...Thus they cater to the soccer Moms. Hince the new X having Fully Independant Suspension. I would hate to see Land Rover hoared out just so Ford's wallet can get that much fatter. Ford has very little care for what Rovers can do off-road, and Land Rover's heritage as an excellent off-road vehicle.

I think Ford is doing way better with Land Rover than BMW did. OK, they pussified the Range, but they also decided - if you can trust rumors - to keep the Defender rolling as it is (due to good volumes) and to keep the next Defender as a ute, maybe even bringing it back to the US. BMW neutered the Disco II from it's possibility to lock manually the center diff, Ford gave it back. Quality improved more than under BMW.

Ford is doing a good job with Aston Martin and a decent job with Jaguar, therefore I'm not worried.

Donkey,
I am glad to see that you know about Rovers!

I had a few in the past when I still lived in Europe, a 109 IIA Ambulance, a beater 90TD and a Defender 110 Td5, and my dad has a '84 Range and currently also owns my Defender 110. That might be why ;)

Jason, the 94-99 Disco series I had a locking center diff, however in the Disco Series II, which is 99-03 does not have one. They have some stupid electronic thingy. However you can retrofit a knob that goes next the the transfer case that will give you the center diff lock. NAS

I'm almost sure also the Disco II would have had the same possibility, just the lever is blocked in open diff position for not confusing the elektrickery. Now they overcame this problem and, if I'm not misstaken, the newest Disco has the locking possibility again from the factory.

Donky,

The 99-01 Discovery's have the capability to lock the centre diff if you retrofit it in there. There are a few options to do this, some are easy, some are a pain. On the 02-03 Discovery's the don't have the CDL nut, and cannot be locked. Currently inn every other market besides the US, the CDL is being sold as a factory option. Rumor is, it's coming to the US in '04.

As far as Ford screwing up Rovers...Have you seen the spy shots of the '05 Discovery? FIS:( Nobody knows all that much about it, but it is supposed to share parts with the Explorer. I don't know what you guys think of the new Explorer's but I doubt you like them too much. The current Defender is slated for production until atleast 2010 because they are currently at full building capacity. And from rumors, the only way Ford is going to let it back into the states is with IFS and maybe FIS. That is no good, personally. So in some ways Ford has done good things, and in others they have not. But I don't see the long term future of Land Rover looking to good.

Will

I'd wheel a Rover.

One of my friends was considering getting a Freelander, but she hates car shopping, so another friend and I were running around researching stuff for her. We got to the Land Rover dealership and were asking questions about the Freelanders, and the guy offered a test drive. I'd never done a test drive before, so I jumped at the chance. This dealership has a little tiny "test course" for the Land Rovers, which basically includes a very offcamber sideways hill, then a very steep up and down hill, then some boards and ridges to drive over. I was impressed with the Freelander.

(Keep reading, there is a point, I promise :) )

After my test drive, my friend asked if he could take out a brand new '03 Range just for fun, and not only did the guy let him test drive it, we took it over the little "course" too. Just to say, even the '03 Range is impressive on this course. My experiences with the Freelander and Range have pretty much proven to me that the Rovers are sucessfully offroadable.

Side note to the story: We stopped by a Jeep dealership in Buckhead (the really rich, stuck up, snotty area of Atlanta), and they told me I couldn't test drive a 4x4 Liberty because they don't sell enough 4x4s to keep any on the lot

Wow, that turned into a long post. Sorry :D

Cool yea a lot of rover dealerships are real nice to people, mine is. Diablo also my family is moving down around Atlanta during August. Would you be interested in maybe wheeling? I'd be more than interested, that'd be great. I'm always trying to find excuses to go offroading :D

I'm going to be moving up to New York for college at the end of August though, so it might be a tight squeeze as far as time is concerned. But let me know when you guys get down here.

There are also a lot of other people on the board around Atlanta, I'm sure we could get quite a group up :)

I know there are a lot of rover owners on d-web also...We could have the rover and explore trip...just imagaine it off-road rigs comeing together, exhust singing and wheeling in harmony....That would be my first wish if i ever had one(maybe someone would recognize that as steve martin? Anyone?)

Don't recognize it, but it would be cool

Hehe, it is an SNL skit in which Steve Martin tells what he wants for christmas, it was a parody of If I had any wish i would have all the children of the world come together, hold hands, and sing songs. Very humourous! And it would be fun, woohoo!

I am staying near atlanta one night next week, on my way to Tellco. The Demon4x4 crew plan on going there every year around this time. Weshd definately hook up for a Tellico run, maybe next year.

Yea we should, just as long as school is finished for that year, and by then i will have my d-90 and it will be stock too, but it should fare pretty well.

i'm just outside atlanta.. let me know when you come down and we'll hit some local trails.

don't worry about that person who msged you man.. don't hold that against us. most of us over here actually think past a 2nd grade level!

mudd*****.. where do you guys stay in atlanta?

Pay this guy no mind. He has been in trouble for unacceptable behavior on this board many times, and as far as I know he was banned.

Yea i have gotten a few people like that, but most i ignore. And hey i can one up him, I am in 3rd grade!!!:)

I will let you know when i go down there. The first time i might actually have my truck down there is christmas break. I think we are going to keep it up at indy, but i will see.

Are you coming to school down here, or just moving?

I am moving down to Atlanta, and I am going to school at Xavier in Ohio.
