Whurring Noise

I've had a whirring noise coming from the front of my '95 explorer 4 x 4. The mechanic thought it was the differential. Now he says it's the transfer case because I told him the transfer motor went out a long time ago and he thinks it got frozen in between gears and the driveshaft is always turning. Your thoughts?

Welcome to this forum! Put it up on a lift to see if it's turning. It will be easier to locate the source of the noise this way.
