I just called Summit Racing once again. Still no headers. Now my new date is the 21st. Its not that I am being picky. I just asked for ANY set of headers. And this is already the 3rd month. Sigh. I dont even know who to be mad at. ARGHGHG!

I'm sure you already know but I saw Explorer Express sells them.
I know how you feel anyways. I've always wanted an ALF shirt but I found out the company that made them for the show stopped in 87.
Life has never been the same.

Sometimes headers don't do much good...

So you might be better off without them. Headers don't always magically improve the power of a vehicle. Sometimes the backpressure caused by the factory manifolds keeps a little of the bottom end in the engine. For a truck this is pretty important if ya know what I mean. Other times, the factory manifolds are as good as anything that will fit the envelope provided by the engine installation, or the way the headers have to be to fit causes uneven cylinder backpressures, thus messing up the flow through the system.

Some food for thought, the header manufacturers often play with the numbers a bit.

That depends on the design of the headers. Considering the other mods that Nick has done, my thought is that the exhaust manifolds are the chief limiting factor in his Explorer IMHO. You're right, the wrong headers can overscavange the engine at low RPM (meaning that the when the exhaust flows out of the valve, it pulls some of the intake charge with it). But, I don't think that aftermarket headers for this engine will have that design problem unless they had to cut corners to make them fit.

I don't know of too many exhaust manifolds that are tuned that well, though some are better than others. The main problem with most manifolds is that they don't have equal length runners, resulting in uneven backpressure between the different cylinders. It's at best, a compromise with some cylinders having too much and others too little. Shorty headers sometimes have this problem as well, though not as bad.

Nick's got the intake flow increased, the heads are better, the exhaust pipe and converter are opened up, but the old manifolds are the same. So, in his case, I think they'll help.

OK I see

I didn't realize that the engine had mods to increase airflow.
Equal length runners are great for whatever RPM they are tuned to. I have found that UNequal lengths work better over a wider RPM range. At least this is tru in long tube designs. One other note, is about tube size. Sometimes smaller tubes keep the velocity of the gases up allowing the pressure at the port to be a bit on the low side when the valve opens. That can help with the extraction.
With a modified engine, Tom is right, get the air out of it. Overlap will suck a little of the intake out the exhaust port, but that is OK life is too short to worry about gas mileage.
Good luck with the install, I wouldn't want to be you the weekend you get then headers. :)

Anybody have their exhaust manifolds extrude-honed?
THAT would be weird eh?

guess I should look at the siggie next time huh?

Thanks for the info guys... well.. if Summit misses another shipping date...ill call that place and see if they have them in stock... also... Ive heard the all headers for the explorer are the same.. .being that no one brand is better than another... with the exception of the materials they are made out of...

Flyguy,

I'm gonna call my guy tomorrow, but I think my JBA's should be in soon! They had a slight backorder, but just stepped up production a bit.

Good luck!
