Okay here me go time for me to B&*ch about my POS EXplorer that is pissing me off to no end right now.

Here it goes:

The 94 XLT 4X$ auto with 90K on it drives fine until it gets ready to shift out of the first gear into the second. Basically, I can force shift at 5K RPMs but definately don't want to be doing that. I can also force the shift if driving up to about 3K rpms, then release the gas ,apply gas and then it shifts. Runs NORMAL after that. I did 65-70 no prob this morning, its just off the line really.

Tranny fluid is full, smells fine, and Reverse, Nuetral, 1, 2 work okay. Its when I am acclerating in OD that there seems to be a lag in the shift.

NO BURN SMELL ANYWHERE.

The check engine light did pop on for a few secs when driving home. Of course this has got to happen in 98 degree weather in NY. Temp gauge reads fine by the way.

Timing? Tune up? last tune up was at 60K.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

I asked my cousin's friend (who is a Ford mechanic (tranny) and he said it could be one of 2 things, Tranny Modulator or time for rebuild. Pray for the modulator.

Ex. GURUS please help. By the way this site is the best.

Thanks.

anyone out there that can help with this?

yeah could be the modulator... or yes time for rebuild mine did the same thing... before it went.

thanks for getting back. How hard is it to fix?

any directions on it? Just to be 100% sure my 94 xlt 4X4 with over drive in the column (not push button)

has a a4ld tranny right?

thx!!!

mine did the exact same thing before my tranny went
had to rebuild
sorry for the bad news

well you have to drain fluid drop pan.... its best to have a shop do it....

wait a second?

to change the modulator on the tranny I need to change the fluid to?

thats odd because in the directions...it does not say anything about dropping the tranny fluid.

does anyone here have a step by step DIY (do it yourself).

Thx

im talking about the gov..... i dont know about the modulator....

why did you mention the govrnor, I dont think I said anything about that.

your making me think I have more work than I have...please stop scaring me. lol lol lol

Thanks for the input anything is truly appreciated.

Somebody on here has got to have the step by step with pics on here. Changing the Tranmission Modulator, come on gang....at least send me in the direction.

Thansk alll.

Could it be a bad vacuum diaphragm?? Or is that the same as a modulator? To get to the diaphragm on my 91 I believe, if I remember, I had to drop the driveshaft and pan to do it. Don't quote me b/c I can't find my Haynes either.

it very well may be the modulator. I replaced mine on my '91 XLT. I believe it was about $20-25 for the part, but the modulator may pretty damn hard to get to. I just had one of my mechanic buddies do it, and he said it was a real b*tch. However, it might just be time to rebuild the tranny too, sorry to hear that if that is the case

Okay now I am really hating the explorer.

I just had modulator changed and it did absolutely nothing. I even changed the tranny filter and topped of the fluid like many of you had mentioned.

Any other Ideas....please help I am really not in the mood to blow 1400-1500 on this rebuild. Life sux.

Dan

anything...I would like to fix it and I think get rid of it...thats how frustrated I am getting at the EX.

Its the worst feeling knowing the truck is ill. other than this issue I have never experienced major probs with it. this truck is so clean.

In all honesty if I was to part out the truck how much $$$ do you think I would be able to make on it..

just curious.

everything is in near perfect condition inside and out.

thanks guys and gals

later

take it too a good tranny shop and just have them look at it.... thats all.... or drive it till it goes....

yeah i took to the tranny shop today and they basically saw nothing externally wrong with it.

no metal in the pan whatsoever and changed that modulator, I highly recommend having someone do it unless you have a lift.

there was some clutch "grease" on the magnet but thats normal where and tear. The fluid was a little dirty due to oxidation. Eventhough the temp gauge is reading normal I think the engine is running a little warmer than the norm.

anyone please keep inputting

EB your awesome...thanks!

Its been hot as hell here the past few days, wait till sunday it is supposed to cool down, then see if your truck is still running hot, mine is at the shop right now, possibly getting a new radiator (if the new t-stat doesnt cool off my X)

i know what you mean about aggrivation towards your X, mine is pissing me off too...

I'm no means a techie like the sharp guys on this forum, but my '96 with a NEW 500-mile-since-install tranny was doing the same thing.

I was told to take it on the highway and stomp on it. I did, damn thing was flying @ 80+ before I slowed down. Haven't had a shifting problem since. Someone said it's in the shifting cable ?? but I forget their exact words. But whatever - it worked for me :D !!

Mind if I drown my sorrows here, too?

My 92 XLT (82k mi) just started doing the exact same thing. Won't shift out of 1st unless you let off and drop the rpm's under 2k... 2nd isn't as bad, and once you're up to speed, its just fine...

I was highway driving this past weekend from Boise ID to north Central Washington and back (10hr each way), and it started ~mid-way there... I had a tranny shop look at it in Okanogan WA: vacuum to the modulator was fine, pan was clean, fluid's fine (I just had it serviced at the end of June). It still drove and I didn't have time for them to tear into it, so he added a bottle of trans protectant, saying this might loosen what he surmised was a stuck valve, but it may not, either...

On the drive back, nothing changed, still shifting weird from a stop. Then ~150 miles from home, the Check Engine light came on... :( No change in behavior, no weird sounds/lags/surges/anything... so, I kept going.
The light went off and came on a couple times over 50 miles, then stayed on for the remainder.

This morning, trans still shifting odd out of 1st, but no Check Engine light... Taking it to a shop tomorrow.

Tune in tomorrow when:
MechanicMan drops the horrible truth on our hero...

Sam

-PS- I'd thought of the "Stomp On It" method, too. half-tempted to try that on the way home from work tonight... :D
