Dan -

I talked to my trans guy about the governor possibility. He said in my case that's not the problem. 2nd gear just isn't there. period. Suspects that a band has broken/come off. Won't know for sure til they get into it.

Seems from what I've read from Mike and others here that the governor sticking problem 1)gets better as the X warms up, 2) still shifts into ALL gears, just not when it should. Mine isn't any better even after 4 hours on the highway, and goes from 1st to 3rd/3rd to 1st...

I turned the Ex over to them this morning for open-heart surgury... If nothing else, I'll have a 92XLT with 82k miles and a tranny that better last the remainder of its lifetime with me! ;)

I'll call them late today or tomorrow morning for the report on what they found. I'll keep ya posted.

lemme know if the governor cleaning works for you.

Lesson learned: I should have gotten an Ex with a 5speed, like I wanted to in the first place!

Sam

the ex just stinks...

I have not done anything to the governor yet, as I am in the middle of moving into my new APT. Of course everything happens at once. I am more than likely going to have my Mothers husband's friend, who is a tranny person take a peek at it. a long trail, I know.

I am hoping the governor is it.

for now I just rev up to 2800rpms, release gas, it shifts, and then drive normally.

life sux right now.

well not really but the EX does.

later boyz.

just think of it as a cool free shift kit till you get it fixed:)

so true...hopefully this cool free shift kit wont ruin anything else for a while.

I want this to stop happening, cant a miracle just happen.

these tranny guys, whether you know them or not I think they are all crooks. and basically they know they got you buy the balls

cheers,

Dan

gentlemen...

Well, the morning report from the transmission guys (Economy Transmission here in Boise) is as follows...

They got into the unit and found that the secondary (?)servo piston had failed. Apparently this is a rubber-molded steel piston, and the rubber molding had torn off one side. This also resulted in burning out the 2nd gear band.

They're doing a pretty thorough job, new clutch packs, replacing some weak factory parts with some better parts, remanufactured torque convertor, yada yada... at least the next thing on this Ex that breaks WON'T be the transmission! :D

so.... what's another $1750?
(I'm trying not to think about it... )

at least I'll have my X back tonight... Not used to having that much space free in the garage! :exp:

good luck with yours, Dan!

thanks to Mike, Dan, and everyone here for your input/vents/willingness to listen. This forum is the best source of info around!

OMG almost 2,000??? and there are just fixing 2nd gear... i got a whole new rebuild and all for 1,200 thats everygear.... whole new everything....

yeah almost 2K is nuts...

I got a price on a rebuild for 1300 beans and I was pissed about that.

Hey you know I am still curious if my issue is the governor because if I go slowly it eventually shifts into second.

I cant manually shift in 2nd but it will down shift when I do it manually.

I am so busy now that I dont even have time to get someone to look at it.

Sam, can you ask your tranny guy of my scenario can possibly be a governor issue, if you want to of course.

I am trying to get as many opinions as possible because half of these characters are full of sh%%

You guys should be happy. My trans was $2,500. Explorers have very bad transmisions. They also break a lot. Really all you can do is deal with it or sell it. It's going to break. Then it's going to break some more.

If Ford is aware of this problem with Tranny's that they installed then they should fix them for free or at least at a discount.

Is there any recalls or anything like that for our tranny's?

this BS all of us having to pay for their crappy work. I will be honest with you, this will more than likely be the last ford I own

Hey guys

Wow Sam, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that, although $1,700 is not bad for a rebuild. I think my new trans was around $2500 when it was all said and done.

nyisles

Like I said before, your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. My mechanic (who I completely trust) said that he is 99% sure that it is the governor. He had other Explorers with the same symptoms where that was the fix. I've been driving mine that way for probably 2000 miles now, including a trip down to San Diego, with no adverse effects on the car. Seriously though, for $50, I'd go ahead and fix it.

And no, there were never any recalls on out trannys. I'm sure Ford was well aware of how underengineered and unsuited they were to our vehicles when they first came out. Advanced Adapters is currently in the R&D stage of trying to adapt an AOD to the 4.0, but who knows when that will be ready to go, if it ever will be.

BTW, the trans issue is one of a number of reasons why I'm pretty turned off at the notion of ever owning another Ford.

Mike

Mike, I am loving your optimism. Thanks, and yes I am going to definately try the governor first.

Ford stinks...I think that is terrible when a company makes a product, knows that there are some defects and then does not do anything about it. I understand they can't guarantee things for ever, but some discounts at the dealer would be nice.

Its amazing what they charge and say they do and the downfall of the whole thing is you never know who is going to be working on your car. Is it the guy who has been there for 30 years or is it the kid out of high school who cant change his own underwear.

In all honesty if I knew about this site a few years ago, I may have never bought the Ex.

Its definately a catch 22 though, because when the truck runs fine, you love it.

Yeah I'd like to meet the engineer who gave the go ahead to put these crappy transmisions in the heavy Explorer. I'd punch him in the face.

ouch that would hurt, but well worth it

the explorer is a pig and they put a transmission in it that basically sux.

is there anyone we can complain to? is there anything we can do to maybe get a discount program going for repairs?

there are alot of tranny issues out here and I am sure people are frustrated as much as I am, especially when the trux are well maintained. For those who neglect the truck, sorry, but thats your own fault.

just venting.

any of you local guys (Long Island, NY) out here work on Trannys.

I need a speed governor cleaning or replacement.

Anyone know how much the part is, I can't find it anywhere. If you want to know why I am cleaning the GOVERNOR or replacing it please read the above.

I am willing to pay if anybody can help out.

I am still driving around, with no cleaning of the governor yet. I just don't have the time lately. I will try tomorrow though.

Curious to see if anyone else has had this problem since I posted

The tranny is a piece of crap...

just sell the @@@@ thing and be done with it. Buy something newer.

1300 is highway robbery you can get a new tranny as i've heard for like 900...i got screwed by Ford for 1400 and some odd dollars but i was stuck...tranny blew on the way home on I-75 in the middle of god knows where so they were the closest and it still cost me 35 for the towing.
