Friend of mine has a 91 EB with 200k on the odometer that has a shift problem. It started out that the 2-3 shift would act odd. It would only shift if you let off of the gas, and then got back on it after it shifted. He took it to a couple shops who said the tranny is shot and he would need a new one to the tune of 2k.

After the last shop looked at it, the shift problem has shifted to the 1-2 gears instead of the 2-3 gears. ODD.

Could this be a sign of the governer at the rear of the tranny binding, or does anyone have a better idea as to what is wrong with this tranny. I have the opportunity to buy it for 1k to use to haul my jetskis around.

Speed governor

controls the 1-2 shift. Vacuum modulator also controls the 1>2 as well as the others. If transmision has never been touched it is probably the vacuum modulator. I'd start with that first. There was a good post about doing it by removing the seat and going through the access pane. Search. For grins you can follow the vacuum line up to the engine and pull it. Any trace of fluid and for sure it is bad. Never mentioned if you checked the fluid level. If VM is leaking the level will drop. That will cause other shifting problems. This could explain your progression of problems. Anyway, it doesn't sound like a rebuild.

Thanks OH, thats exactly what I wanted to hear. Transmission was replaced, not rebuilt 2 yrs ago. Guy has never changed the tranny fluid but it doesnt smell burned or anything.

Will clean up engine and check the VM tonight. I remember reading the post on how to check and change it so thats not an issue.

Again, thanks

Joe
