Will harmonic balancer from 2007 Mustang work on 2004 ST?

Hi all. Getting ready to install a low mileage 2007 Mustang engine into a 2004 ST and have a few questions. Hopefully someone can help me out.

I have seen a few different threads regarding having to change the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, valve covers and use the existing wiring harness to connect everything to the PCM. Also there was a thread that the old crankshaft position sensor from the old engine had to be swapped over onto the new(used) engine. However, it was indicated that the harmonic balancer from the old engine did not have to be swapped.

Why is this? The harmonic balancers look a little bit different from the old engine to the new engine so I am wondering if just changing the sensor over will actually work. Maybe the new engine uses a crankshaft position sensor that sends a different voltage or resistance signal? Will the CPS read the tone ring correctly on the new balancer? My understanding is that this is a just a magnet spaced out over many increments so the PCM knows engine RPM. Does this sensor have to be lined up with the magnet at TDC for the crankshaft position?

One last thing, there is a wire bolted down more or less in the center of the cavity underneath the intake manifold. This wire goes down the left side of the engine (left if facing it head on from the front) but is hanging beside the crankshaft position sensor. I did not unplug this one and am curios to know if this is the plug in for the the CPS? If it terminates to the engine....how does the PCM receive the signal?

Part numbers for the harmonic balancer are the same according to RockAuto, so I'd think they are identical. So are the RA part numbers for the Motorcraft crank position sensor.

I believe the sensor in the center of the engine, under the intake manifold, is the knock sensor.

Thanks for the reply koda. I also looked at rockauto and checked all listed items for both crank position sensor and harmonic balancers for the '04 ST and '07 Mustang. Most of the CPS parts are for '01-'10 ST one was for '05-'10 ST and these were mostly the same for the '05-'10 Mustang.

The harmonic balancers however, not all of them fit both the ST and the Mustang. The Dayco, Pioneer, and Dorman balancer fits '01-'10 ST and '05-'10 Mustang, and the SKP fits only '03-'10 ST. The new one I have is the SMP PC250 and according to their site this one is only for '05 Mustangs.

The new one looks like the sensor that came off of the dead engine in that there is a recessed hole in the side where the plug is. For the new engine (as well as all of the pictures I have seen) for the '07 engine this hole is covered off with the plastic casing. Perhaps to prevent this area from filling up solid with grease and oil. The old engine sensor was so full of grease that I did not even attempt to clean it.

I will be installing the engine this week and will have to rely on the person who is helping with the project to remember where that plug gets connected. Makes sense that it is a knock sensor. After all, there is not a better place to put one.

Going out now to get things finished being being prepared for the installation.

This is manufactured by a different company in China and no technical info is available although the person I spoke to said even though they look identical, they are certainly different inside.

I saw a youtube video where a harmonic balancer had to be replaced due to separation and the one that separated looked like the harmonic balancer on the the Stang and the replacement new harmonic balancer on the video looked like the one on the dead engine.

Basically, as the harmonic balancer spins past the CPS, the CPS registers the passing of the steel ring tone increments. Basically, as long as the ring tone increments are the same, there will be no problem. So, after counting the increments and finding them to be the same I am confident that things will work fine.

Engine going in tomorrow. Got delayed a bit due to cold and rainy weather. Warm and sunny now until Sunday.

Got the replacement engine installed....everything re-connected, new fluids. Cranked it over and it started up and ran beautifully.

So yes.....despite the harmonic balancers looking quite different between the original one and the one on the '07 Mustang....the replacement engine works with the new crankshaft position sensor.

Hope this helps anyone with a very high mileage engine looking for an organ donor from a low mileage wrecked Mustang.
