Well, after some investigating I found a post made by TekMan05 where he inquired with Cam Motions about having a custom done up (I assume it was for a daily driver/quarter mile Ex) here:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=313994&page=2
Here is what we suggest:
dur. @ .050 int. 216 exh. 220
lift with 1.6 .496 .504
lobe sep. 112
int. c/l 108
this cam will not have a noticeable idle it will be pretty much smooth idle but this is as big as a cam you need for what you want to do with the vehicle.
Price on the cam runs $349.00 plus frt.
So I was looking over Ford OEM and Racing cam specs and the closest match was the M-6250-A332 which is for a 351W with hydraulic flat tappet. Interestingly, it can be classified as a RV cam making peak TQ at 3000rpm and peak HP at 4500rpm.
Quick Comparo:
Mustang HO Cam:
.444/.444 lift and 278/278 adv. duration
Explorer Cam:
.422/.448 lift and 256/266 adv. duration
Cobra Cam:
.479/.479 lift and 270/270 adv. duration
Cam Motions Custom Cam:
.496/.504 lift and 216/220 adv. duration
FRPP M-6250-A332
.472/.496 lift and 214/224 adv. duration
It's interesting how much less duration was recommended by CM, much less than most cams made for mustangs.
Hell, maybe $350 would be money well spent on a custom cam for a "stocker" build so you KNOW it's optimal, especially if you've done some home porting (after having them flowed). Some people don't think twice about dropping that much into a catback or a CAI. I love the "finding hp in the oem parts" game as as much as the next guy, but ****, $350 ain't really all that much. But, I guess it all comes down to "eye of the beholder"...

One thing I noticed is the HO,Cobra and Explorer cams listed duration is Advertised and the other two are at 0.050". Duration @ 0.050" is what most people refer to, I believe it's the industry standard. I think that is what makes the two Mustang cams in the list appear like they have much more duration when in acuality, I don't think they are far apart as you are thinking. From my knowledge, less duration and overlap is better for the low end like you said. The minimal overlap is good for improving throttle response I think. I wish I could make sense of the lobe separation angle though. I know what it is but not the effects it has on engine characteristics. I have to say you're right on the price though, an OTS cam isn't a whole lot cheaper and if I were going to spend that much, I may as well go custom. (Laugh it up CDW)
