I just purchased my 97 Explorer XLT! I Love it.. Right off I'm wondering if I swap out the factory HU for a new one, will I still be able to use the disc changer with the new HU?

As far as I know, I have a premium audio system with no rear subwoofer.

Will I want to bypass the amp as well?

Detailed help is appreciated, because I'm new to the explorer world and have intermediate experience with car audio systems.

Thanks.

what about an amp?

Could I use an aftermarket amp with my factory head unit and factory cd changer?

Yes you can. I have a Alpine CD changer added to my system and I also have audio playing through it for the video system. When looking for a amp look for one that has speaker level inputs. If you want to make your install easy look at the MTX amps they have speaker level input that also turns the amp on when it sences the voltage on the speaker leads.

wow

i didn't know that !
all this time i have wanted to change the factory amp to my sub in the back but i always thought i had to go and get a new HU too !
so could i go and swap the factory 4 channel amp with a more power full one

new questions

Is it safe to assume that since I have a CD changer, I have a premium audio system?

And if I do have a premium audio system, where would the amp be, if I have one (keeping in mind that I DO NOT have a subwoofer).

And if I do have a factory amp, how is it connected, speaker inputs or RCA's?

I don't need a great system, but I would like to upgrade just a bit. i.e. new amp and speakers.

If I do decide to get jamming (after a few years) I'll rewire the whole truck and start from scracth.

The amp is behind the rear passenger panel. The radio is conected to the amp by away called Differential outputs from the radio. It is kind of like a RCA signal but the Negative wire is not referenced to ground like he sheild of a RCA. If you want to replace the amp you need a adaptor.

That link didn't work. It could be down, but could you check to make sure that it's right. thanks.
Anyway, call me stupid but where is exactly is that rear passenger panel at? Should it be located in the cargo area, on the passenger side?

Thanks for all of your help so far.

I do not know why the link does not work but that is there web address. Try doing a search for them. The amp would be behind the passenger rear panel in the back of the truck.

checked it out

Okay I found the amp, and the sound gate website! Thank you for your help..
