if you have a 2.9L Ranger with the Mitsu FM145 Manual trans, the 4.0L will bolt up, but there is not much telling how long it will hold. If you have this trans, swapping to a Mazda M5OD from another 4.0L Ranger is your best bet.

haha after like 2 hrs of searching an reading i finally came across a thread. looks like itll work its pretty much my goign to be a daily driver back an forth to work, all highway, with maybe 4 times this summer of wheeling, not climbing, so i should be all set. PLUS the tranny i have is FULLY rebuilt :-D looks like im good to go!..

figgures RITE after i post on a couple forums THEN I find the answer! sorry everyone ! =-D

There were three 5 speeds behind the 2.9L, the Toyo Kogo, Mazda and Mitsu.
All 3 should bolt up to a 4.0L OHV.
The mitsubishi is considered by many to be the strongest of the three.
I have also heard all 3 units were manufactured by Mazda. Go figure that one out.
The Mazda was updated in 89 to accept the new 4.0L power, then again in 91 and 93, etc.
I know of a 86 ranger with a turbo charged 4.0L used for camping that has run the original Mitsubishi 5 speed for years with no problems. Lost touch with the owner a couple years ago, but was still going strong.
I never had a single issue with my original mitsu 5 speed, it was removed at 130K miles when I converted to a 4.0L, I had lots of problems with rebuilt 4.0L mazda 5 speeds after that...
