Ok i have 2 questions.

1. For those of you that have used them a lot, is it better to have a fixed mount front winch or the portable plate that hooks into a front or rear receiver? I ask b/c I have wondered if you get into a situation that you are stuck, pulling forward may not always be the best option so would being able to winch backward be a better idea?

2. I had a friend who had a winch on his Jeep. He said he had some sort of a winch accessory that could be used if there are no trees etc. around. He described it a a shovel with an attach point. Has anyone ever heard of this before or seen one? Where do you get them? I think it is an interesting idea (get stuck in the desert or on the beach for example) but was not sure what it would look like or how it would work.

Thanks
B

1. I had a warn 8274 mounted to the front of my truck and my girlfriend has a 9000lb warn mounted on her jeep. Only reason I can see having a portable one is if you live in or go to alot of high crime areas and are affraid it might get stollen or need to use it on alot of different vechicles. Nearly all the reciever mounted winches I have seen stick way too far out the front and look like a good canidate to get smaked on something.

2. What you are desribing sounds like a pull-pal I am sure if you goiogle it you will come up with more info.

1. The reciever mount winch has its benefits but as stated before the ones I've seen stick out pretty far. I went thru the same dillema. I finally figured that I don't wheel alone so there will always be some one to help or get help. And I didn't want store the thing in the cab while wheeling. I ended up just mounting one if the front.

2. Yes its a pull pal. I think the web site is www.pullpal.com. Those are great if you wheel in the sand.
