It shouldn't, but the ignition cylinder may be worn out. I had a Taurus that I could start, pull the key out, and keep driving. :D

My 99 XLT works the same way, it acts pretty normal to me. but if you open a door and close it doesn't work anymore.

I just checked mine again...the windows go down with no key with the doors open, closed, open then closed....they basically work all the time

i know that the explorer should, according to the manual, let the windows work for 5 minutes after the vehicle is turned off, and the doors have not been open, that' how it goes..... at least according to my manual...

You are correct. :)
It is tied to the drivers door, its waiting for you to get out.
What does it do if you hit the lock on the remote while you are inside?
Just thinking.......:p:
