Hi All,

I got a 1999 Explorer 4.0 SOHC cheep from a distant relation who did not want it any more, and it has a few problems. The first is the blend door, but i have fond many posts of fixing that, the second and more important is the transfer case wiring. On having a good look around, I found that the 3 wires that come out of the back of the transfer case have been cut. I was not sure if this was because it had snagged something or not, so i reconnected them. After doing that, the truck seems to be in perminant 4wd, when going slow and turning i can hear and feel the front wheels skipping. Also, with the wires connected or not, occasionally the 4WD and 4WD Low lights on the dash flash for a few seconds. I disconnected the wires and the truck now drives ok again.

Can anyone tell me what the 3 wires are for and why it feels like the diffs are locked when they are connected. With the wires connected, selecting 4WD on the dash switch lights up 4WD on the dash but there is no noise from the transfer case, selecing 4WD Low, I hear a clnk form the box.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Ian...

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. Looking through the other posts, I think you are right. I will take the motor off tonight and have a look. One think I did not get from the posts is where I didconect the wiring from. Is there a connector somewhere new the motor that I unplug to diconect the cable? Looking at the pictire, there appears to be 2 wires that go to the connector from the box (brown and blue) that dont have a connector. Do I cut thes and then reconnect or do the come off somehow?

Just want to be prepaired before I start taking thinks off!!

Thanks

Ian..

Hi All,

Right, I got under the truck and removed the shift motor. Inside is slightly different, as it only has Hi N Lo on the transfer box. Apart from the wires that go into the motor and the 3 that have been cut, there are 3 or 4 other wires that go to different places on the transfer box. Do I cut these or can they be removed?

Also, when the motor was off, I started the truck and moved the 4x4 selector from Auto to Hi and Lo and there was no movement on the shift motor.

I am still confused about the 3 wires that have been cut, and why when they are connected the transfer case locks the front diff. Is this something more that just a shift motor. I am assuming (probably incorrectly), that as there is only Hi N Lo on the transfer case, that the 2 and 4wd is controlled somewhere else (i assume by the 3 wires).

Does this make any sence to anyone? I bought a workshop manual, but all it says is that for transmission related problems take it to a dealer.

Sorry to go on, but I use the truck to transport equipment arond at servral lakes some of which need 4wd. At the moment when I get to a site, I have to crawl underneath and reconnect the 3 wires. Although this gives me 4x4 driving on the paths is then not good because the truck does not like turning tightly.

Thanks

Ian...

Be carefully turning when in 4x4, you could break your drive line. I would not even turn at all in 4x4, at least tight turns without first coming out of 4x4.

Hi, This is the problem, with the wires connected it wont come out of 4x4, and with the wires disconnected it wont go into 4x4.

I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing before i start chopping it to bits. I saw on anotner post about removing the pins from the conenctor. Is this the correct thing rather that chopping and reconnecting the wires? Is it as easy and the picture made it look. I have no way of getting the truck up in the air, so all work is being done with me on my back on the drive.

Thanks

Ian...
