Wiring: Alternator To Battery?

91 Ex, have a dual post battery, can we take the wire from the alternator and send it directly to the battery, what complications would I be looking at and what kind of gain would I be looking at?

Thats one of the steps in the "big 3" upgrade. Using 0 gauge wire from the alt to the battery.
 






i saw that, but i figured that was more for cars whose electrical is already ran that way, because ours is ran to solenoid then to battery. i had another car where it was straight from alt to battery. i did some what an upgrade, i didnt do all 0s i upgraded and made everything a 4 ga and just added a 0 ga ground
 












The alternator to solenoid/batt wire has a fuseable link in it to protect the rest of the system...essentially a "Y" made from two smaller gauge wires that will break before the whole electrical system fries. I wouldn't suggest redoing this connection unless a similar sort of fuseable link is made to offer the same or better protection.

You can run the positive cable from the alternator rear terminal to the battery positive terminal since the battery is the buffer in the charging system anyway, but it's still a good idea to have some kind of protection, though the voltage regulator should do that if it's working correctly.


0-6 AWG Crimpers aren't usually cheap, but Harbor Freight is probably the place to get the cheap ones. Find and use one of their extra 15-20% off coupons when they're on sale for an even better deal.
 






I have all stock neg wires, added a 0GA wire to the body, then wire from Alt to solenoid is a 4GA with an inline waterproof fuse, then from solenoid to battery is a 4ga wire, since it seems like we can and i have a dual mount battery, ill run the alternator to the battery and then battery to solenoid. ive heard it charges battery faster and better for other cars so im hoping its the same way now.

my alternator is a 150 HO alt with a 80 anl fuse
 






Instead of crimping you, could solder it if you have a small propane torch. I put the terminal in a vice, drop in a solder pellet and heat until it melts. Expose an inch or so of the wire and stick it in and let it cool.

Or buy pre-crimped lengths of wire from any auto parts store.
 






ok since i got that dual mount (top/side) battery. I put the alternator (4ga, soon to be 0ga) straight to the battery on the side (since top was full) and i got an improvement on charge quickness and keeping steady volts, now that i did that though wish i could take the wire from battery to solenoid back down to an 8 so i didnt have to dual post the battery
