I have been working with JK080 on replacing the reverse band on my 5r55e for my 98 explorer. He said it would be good for me to post my problem so it can help someone else and maybe we could get some more insight into the problem.
Got the band in and the tranny back together without any problems but on the test drive it would not go into drive, only 2nd and would not shift out of 2nd into any other gear. I got it to go into reverse once but cant any more. I can shift into drive after I have gotten started in 2nd but still will not shift into a higher or lower gear. the shift cable is out of alignment with the gear letters on the shift indicator. any other ideas from other members is sure welcom..

Does the transmission bind in manual low? Like the brakes are on.

If so the the overdrive band may be stuck on, check that servo for a torn lip seal.

The car was shifting great even after the reverse band broke. When I broke it down there was very little wear if any. Being that the VB was stock I ordered a rebuilt VB from Donny Lester at Central Valve Bodies. I installed the new VB,Adjusted the bands,Adjusted the shift cable,Filled it back up with ATF and got in and cranked her up. It went in to reverse backed down the driveway and drove like a charm. It was late so the test drive was short but sweet. Will try again tomorrow with fingers crossed. I would have never had the courage to tackle something of this magnitude without the knowledge and confidence that I gained from this site. I can say I saved several thousand dollars by doing it myself and knowing that I was just an e-mail away from people that could guide me in the right direction was priceless. If I never use this site again it will be my pleasure to become an Elite member.
