another problem recent. 1997 Explorer XLT 4.0L will not go above 60-65mph with the pedal down to the floor for awhile. What could that be? its got 126,000miles on it.

The RPM is about 3,000 -4,000. it shifts fine but seems like it just doesnt go any faster and I know a explorer should be able to go well above 60mph. The trans works fine everywhere else so I dont think its that.

That rpm doesn't sounds right... high. When my 96 is going down the road at 60ish, the rpm is around 2100. Me thinks you are having slipping in your trans / torque converter.

x2. Plus, it seems to low to accidentally be in 4low

maybe it's stuck in 4WD. i think the top speed when in 4WD is about 55 or 60.

...not sure if this will help but do you have overdrive??? if so, it sounds like it is only going up in drive only...:dunno:

RPM's sound high for just drive, too. Overdrive at freeway speed is only around 3500rpm

...i checked mine yesterday and i run about 2300rpm at 70 with o.d....:D

Could be that the tranny is downshifting because the pedal is all the way to the floor, so it is just doing what it is told to do by the driver. If this is the case, it could be a bad cat converter or other fuel/engine performance problem. If the CEL isn't on, it could very well be a cat.
