- 97 Explorer XLT 4.0 sohc
Hi Glacier,(if your reading this) It's nice to see you back. A lot of people have said a lot of good things about you. I was hopping you could give me your opinion about whats going on with my 97 explorer. So, I'd like to start at the beginning, and I do apologize for the length of this. I started having problems when I would get up to 50 or 60 m/h and if I let my foot of the gas I would hear a loud grinding and pop out of gear, and as soon as I pushed the gas again it would go back in gear. Under 50 m/h everything was fine. The trany always shifted nice. Finally reverse went out. I spoke to many people about this(unfortunately not on here) and they all agreed it was my trany. So after looking for the right trany for a long time I Finley found one. This is about the time I found this web site and began to ask about the right was to get at the top bolts. The response was incredible. So I got the trany out and am ready to install the used one I found which did come out of a 97 explorer. This is were my dilemma starts, first the trany I took out has two wires on the top were as the used one I have dose not. So I went on like here to ask around about this and IZwack said you would be the one to ask about this. Now here comes the big dilemma, as I was browsing around the site I came across a man that had the exact same problem as me and had taken it to a shop to get answers. the first place he took it said it was the trany but he wonted another opinion so he took it to Mr. Transmission and they said that the last place didn't know what they were talking about, that it is the t-case not the trany. So he had the t-case rebuilt and it solved all his problems. So I started talking to IZwack again and he had me do a few test on the t-case. I turned the input shaft while holding the output shaft and was able to turn it freely while able to hold the rear output in place. So here I am with two tranys, one I'm not sure I can use and it turns out that the t-case was probably the bad guy. So what do you think about all this? I think I'll end up reinstalling the trany I took out, it has 144,000 on it, and start looking for a used t-case to install. Then hang on to the used trany I got (IF I CAN USE IT) and my old t-case and maybe learn to rebuild them. So again what do you think, Will I be able to use the other trany? Is it my t-case and not the trany? The trany is a 5r55e and the t-case is the 4405 with the sensor by the rear output and the cv on the front output.
I really hope to hear your opinion on all this.
Thank you so much for listening.
