Writeup - Disabling The Door Ding

I have seen really two major methods of disabling the door ajar ding in cars. Either cut the wire or pull the fuse. Unfortunately in many cars the circuit that this is on is also shared by another function. in the case of a first gen explorer, it is the lights on ding. Personally i need that, So in order to correct this in my 92 explorer i installed a switch.

1. Locate the sound box that emits the ding. it should be under the dash and looks like this:

2. The wire that you need to cut is the red and pink wire. Just put a switch in line and mount it.

I put the on position on my switch so that it faced the engine, that way if i ever bumped it with my knee it would be in the on position.

As I read this.. with the swich off the lights on ding still works but not the door ajar ding..

With the switch on both the lights on ding and the door ajar ding works.

is that correct?

no, i was unable to figure out a way to only disable the door ajar ding. this switch disables that AND the lights on ding. I just wanted a way to open my doors and listen to music while i was camping or cleaning my car, this was the easiest way i could think of.

i have a 92 eddie bauer and mine wasnt under the dash, it was right under the ashtray and the floor vent,all i did was unplug it, all my lights still work and i can leave the door open with the radio on etc etc, i didnt have to cut any wires or make any switches, wierd?

exactly.. but now you can't just "turn it on".. and also you don't have the headlight dinger anymore.

correct.. w/out that little box you don't get the dinger when you leave your lights on and the vehicle off.

lol thats the first thing i did to mine when i got it was to kill the dam chime.i just unplugged mine right under the ash tray .but haveing a chime thats tells your lights are on is not really a issue since i only use headlights at night turning them off when i shut the truck down .personally i would like to wire up a switch that shuts off the cabin lights so i can leave the hatch up or a door open and listen to the radio without the battery going down .

I have three other light settings i can use so im not really worried about loosing one of them lol and its completly worth it not having the door chime driving me crazy when im working on my x,i havent gotten pulled over once about my lights,people that dont own trucks or suvs dont even know the difference, but then again no one has ever said anything about it, with all the HID kits available these days my lights could be so much brighter lol

I might just do this. Don't need the headlight chime. Yea, I've left the lights one before, so obviously the chime doesn't do squat for me
