Whats in your wallet?
Easiest would probably be a 4.0 OHV from 95-00 (last year made) from an Explorer or Ranger. You can probably trust a junkyard engine (especially if it was wrecked). Those engines are pretty stout.
Next would be an OHV from 90-94 (1st gen), may require some swapping, maybe not.
An SOHC is possible, but it is very strongly suggested to rebuild the timing system. The engine could also be trashed too from the timing issue, and the truck may have been junked for that reason.
May require mods to the wiring.
The OHV is less powerful but more reliable.
Finally a V8 swap, then you have have to deal with a different trans, transfer case, computer, wiring, etc.
