I HAVE A 92 XLT 4X4 , BUT WHEN I TRY TO ENGAGE THE 4X4 IT DOESNT WORK, ALL YOU HEAR IS A CLICK IN THE BACK WHERE THE REAR WINDOW WASHER FLUID GOES. ALSO THE RPMS ON THE TRUCK ARE ALWAYS RUNNING HIGH. THEY ARE ABOUT 3000 ON FIRST GEAR AND WONT CHANGE GEAR UNLESS I REMOVE MY FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL. TO ME , THE LATTER FEATURE IS A GOOD THING BC IT FEELS AS THOUGH I HAVE A STANDARD TRANSMISION. BUT OVERALL I KNOW ITS NOT A GOOD THING TO BE HAVING THE TRUCK DO THAT ON ITS OWN SO IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS THEY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Yeah, turn off your caps lock. :)

Go to a tranny shop NOW!!! get them to pull the pan and check for metal and pray they dont find any.
as for the 4x4 sounds like a shift motor or a burnt fuse?

I doubt a toasted fuse.....If it were smoked....he wouldn't be hearing the clicking in the rear of the truck (which is where the brain for the t-case is) Use the search function, and look up t-case motor, and it may just be that ya need to clean the t-case motor. As for the tranny, sounds to me like it's abour to pass into another realm of life. Be prepared for the worse....b/c the A4ld trannys are known to puke.

The A4LD is infamous for going bad around the 100k marker. Hope you have been saving your money my friend...it's not cheap!!

Kinda makes ya sick huh?Dead Link Removed

Get the tranny checked.

I had a similar problem with my transmisison recently. It would keep revving until about 4500 rpm, then suddenly shift. The next day, it stopped going in reverse. It turns out my torque converter got fried (literally), and then the rest of the tranny went to hell. So now I have a 99 Explorere with 38,000 miles and a brand new tranny from front to back. Get it looked at now, before you cause more damage, and increase the price...

do a search...this has been covered 1000 times (add nauseum)

Well, as for the 4x4 problem, I know exactly what that is, it happened to me over the winter. It has to do with a piece back in the place that holds the jack. You have to take it to a Ford dealership and have them fix it-if I remember correctly, costs about $250 (something like that). As for the rpm's, could it be because somehow the 4 wheel drive got turned on, and won't turn off?? Just a guess, good luck with the problems!
