This is my second and hopefully much more helpful writeup on converting the 95-01 gauge cluster to LEDs. I have tried 3 different types of 12v wedge based 194 replacements and I have finally found the one that puts out enough light and lights up the cluster evenly. Here were my candidates. From Left to Right: Inverted Wedge LED, Refractor LED, SMD LEDs The Results Inverted Wedge LED: Even Light output, but not bright enough Refractor LED: Horribly Uneven light output, Short Lifespan (they started blowing on me) SMD (Surface Mount Diode): Even Light output and very bright (brighter the the 194LL Bulbs) Getting to the cluster: Step 1 Remove the Radio Step 2 Remove the 2 screws (circled in red)...
I want to put Blue Neons under my '92. I have a few questions.... How many do I need? I was thinking 2. Is there a particular place they go? Is there a common place to put switches in the 91-94s? Where do the wires go, and how do I put in the switches? Lastly, what kind should I buy? MATT
I wanted to do this for a long time, and I finally got some time last week. Very cheap only cost about $8.00 used 5 15,000 MCD 5mm Blue LEDs on each side, mounted on project boards that can be found at Radio Shack. I Highly recommend this, it gets a lot of attention and is a nice accent to any vehicle. This is practice for my chassis under glow project Im doing this spring. What do you guys think?
i'm not really going anywhere with this, but i would just like to see how many people are interested. If we get a lot of responses then we can show a couple of manufacturers and try to get something done. After some exploration, I’ve figured out how to modify the foglamp circuit for a 2001 Explorer so that the foglamps stay on with the high beams. This mod is actually much easier, IMHO, than for the earlier models. First, I located the relay box. It’s mounted to the same plate that holds the bottom of the airbox. I got into it, and here’s what I found: 1. There are sockets for a total of six relays, two large (the size of a conventional Bosch relay) and four smaller relays, in a 1 2 1 2 configuration. The six sockets were arranged like this, with socket 1 being toward the front of the vehicle: 1 2 3 4 5 6 On my Explorer, socket 1 was empty from the factory...
Here Is how to convert your dome lights from light bulbs to LEDs. Starting with the Driver and Front Pax What you will need 20 LEDs 55,000mcd 20 Resistors to bring the voltage down from 12volts to what your LEDs are rated at. Mine were 3.6v Radio Shack Project board First cut 2 pieces of the project board to 1.35" X1.35" Then arrange your LEDs on the board the way you want them. I used 10 on each board, 6 as spot lights and 4 on the corners as floods (grind the tips flat on the 4). Solder a resistor to each + lead of each LED and wire all the - leads together. Use Hot glue to attach each LED. Use clear nail polish to refinish the 4 ground down LEDs. Test Now disassemble the over head console and remove the 2 bulb holders...
Thought I share my install currently underway. I am going slow and not rushing this as I want to get it right the first time. Started with the Morimoto Mini H1 4.1 Bi-xenon Projectors and graphite shrouds from http://www.theretrofitsource.com/ and the Black Crystal Headlights from ebay. I didn't realize how transparent the shrouds are so I painted the insides with aluminum engine paint to fix that. I am also installing the dummy alarm LED's in them to flash when the truck is off. I used one of the existing holes in the base of the projector's and angle drilled it to fit the LED. Here you can see the hole. And with LED. I attached the LED's with the same Silicone II that is recommended to install the projectors...
'97 high-mount brake light "rebuild" FINALLY DONE! EDIT: Adding the details to the first post now that the project is finished. OK, I finally got tired of trying to figure out this stupid 21" neon high-mount brake light problem, and in the process ended up with two lamp assemblies. So, after searching for the best fix, I finally decided to gut one of the assemblies, and build by own LED array to put inside it. Here is what I did .... After removing the assembly from the truck, and the lamp from the assembly, I baked the lamp in the oven at about 200-250 for 15-20 minutes, or just long enough to be able to "peal" off the lens. Hard to fathom since the 2nd generation effectively ended about 8 years ago. There didn't seem to be much in the way of new aftermarket offerings, but since 410 Fortune did up his aftermarket projector setup a few weeks ago, there is now another rendition. To boot, a new EF Vendor is offering a pretty good Group Buy on them. Hey mods, sorry for the cross post, but I thought this was a logical place to link the buy too. Selfish motivations too because I'm on the Buy list now and the Buy needs at least 10 people. I'm surprised there seems to be so little interest so far. They've got a lot of potential if you can get by the LED halos and LED corner lights (not my cup of tea).
Based on a desire for brighter lights, I decided to install a heavy-duty headlight wiring harness on my ‘99. Currently I am running Silver Star 9007 bulbs. I decided to try this harness with the Silver Stars to see what improvement in light output would result; further, it also gives me the potential to run higher wattage lamps. I decided to make my own smoked tail light tint. It is static-cling window film in 20% limo black from Wal-Mart, or i have seen it other places also. Then cut to fit. The tint is a thin static cling vinyl unlike real tint, so you can use and reuse them as many times as you want. The tint comes in a roll. It cost me $10.19, and hour of my time. I made the templates by cutting a hole in a sheet of paper, taping it to the light and tracing the shape to the paper. Then I cut the shape and transferred it to the tinting.
