First fix

This is how the service dept attempted to fix the water leak the first time around. Spread sealer everywhere and hope it is fixed including some on the paint

The next 2 photos I believe came from the factory that way. Didn't notice until I was checking the work on the right side. Looks like the factory sealer wasn't covering good enough so they smeared some clear silicone in it. I can poke half of the tip of pinky finger in that hole.

I brought the service manager out and told him how dissatisfied I was with the work besides it still leaked. He was very understanding and set me up to bring it into the body shop, not sure why it didn't go there in the first place. So that's where it sits since Monday.

Hello bruce i also live in nj and recently found a water leak in the right rear of my 11 explorer. I am very close to having my warranty expire, and want to bring it a competent dealer so as not to have problems reoccur later on after my warranty is gone. My local dealership has lost my trust and business. Do you have an update on your veh? If you do is the quality of work acceptable? I am willing to travel for peace of mind. I am in belmar, thank you

Thanks for the update, adamantium. I'm glad that your dealer is continuing to work with you on getting this permanently resolved. If you need any additional assistance from me, just let me know.

Hi SSlol,

You're welcome to visit any Ford dealership you like for service. I'm also happy to look at your case and see how I can assist. To get started, send me a PM with your VIN, preferred servicing dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name; I'll do the rest!

We had some heavy rains this past Friday. On Saturday morning when I was removing my daughter's stroller, I noticed water drops on the side of the third seat row (driver side rear). I touched the top panel just above and it was soaking wet. The spare tire cover is also soaked. I have had my 2011 ford explorer limited since Aug 2011 and I just now noticed this. Not sure how long my explorer has been enduring this water leak. My wife is upset. I took it to the dealership on Saturday, but they said they couldn't do anything until Monday. I schedule an appointment for this Monday. Hopefully a water damage specialist evaluates rather some mechanic. I can't wait to get this fixed and hope that it gets done the first time, right. I am concern on what I am reading that this might not be fixed the first time around. We were very happy with our Ford Explorer and now we are not as excited.

Sorry to hear about the water problem. I park in my garage but have been through a few big downpours while driving. Can't say I've ever checked for water leaks but haven't noticed any. I have 2 years left on the lease so any issues that pop up, and there haven't been any yet, will go back with the Ex when it is returned.
I doubt most dealers have a water damage expert on staff.
Good luck.

What has to be done to take something to a class action suit? I lost at least $5,000 when I got rid of mine but didn't want to deal with what I know would have come when my warranty ran out. Again, I'm a Ford die hard, but after reading some of the posts about how this was brought to Engineering's attention 2+ years ago, something is way wrong with this. I mean, 2013's with the exact same issue? Come on Ford. :(

I have a 2013 Sport on order and if I would have seen this thread prior to ordering I wouldn't have ordered. Now I'm worried!

Welcome to the Forum stordi.:wavey:
I don't think you have to worry about this issue. Only a few owners have had it. There are many owners who have had little or no problems with their Explorers. Mine is 2 years old and I have had a front right sensor replaced, had the random windshield wipe TSB done and recently had the battery replaced. Those are the only issues I've had apart from having the MFT updates done and the reprograming of the cooling fan control module.
Unfortunately there are also a few members who seem to have a run of bad luck with their vehicles, but I think that can be said of other manufacturers as well. Relax and enjoy your Explorer when it comes in. I'm sure you will be happy.

Just because your vehicel doesn't leak, there are many others that do. 60% of the Explorers that I have looked at, either on the Ford PD lot, or dealer lot (when I took my vehicle in for the 2nd time) leaked. Most owners don't have passengers sitting in the 3rd row when it raining, so they are less likely to know that have a problem.

The point of this thread is so that current and potential buyer are aware of this issue.

Ford is aware of this issue. The Customer Service Rep that monitor's this site, Ford PD Engineers and Chicago Assembly Plant PVT Engineers know about this.

It's very frustrating that WE paid $45K plus for a vehicel that has a known leak and Ford either doesn't care or they don't have the expertise to fix this after 2 years.

As I stated a year ago on this thread, this leak has the potential to be a Safety Issue. Water creates rust, rust creates weakness in the system.

Do the vehicles that have the leak share a common site where the water comes in? It would seem it might be the rain gutter where the roof rails attach. When at home my Explorer is always in the garage. I am the only one in the vehicle, with the exception of my 2 Shelties from time to time, so I'm not likely to notice any water penetration when driving. I haven't noticed anything inside that would indicate a problem.
If the problem is in a common area it may be easier for owners to test their own and verify if it leaks or not.

Every time this topic comes up I can't help but check my Ex and I really don't like removing the spare tire just to check for dampness or any water intrusion. We recently had rain and fortunately there was no leak, I also check after every washing which is about every two weeks. As a side note, I was watching Top Gear USA and the range rover they were using leaked water in the dome light. That got me thinking since ford used to own land rover maybe there is a connection hmmm... Ahhhh maybe I am just too bored to be thinking about it. I am just hoping that all the folks who have these issues will get it resolved

2011 Ford Explorer Rear Roof Leak

So i've had the truck in twice for water in the back. The 1st time they spent a so called week looking for it and then told me there was not leak. A month later i bring it back, they spend 1 day and found the leak but had the truck for a full week to fix it. Water was coming in thru the rear gate door bracket. So i get the truck back with assurances that its fixed. Well it rained today and guess what? Water dripping out of the 3rd row seat belt holder in the roof. So annoyed. Then need to put out a report to Ford on this issue

100% of those who have a problem have seen a problem... Unsubstantiated statistics are meaningless. Seriously doubt 60% of anything leaks. Anyway, haven't had problem one with my EX, nicest car I've ever owned, and it's just the XLT.

Lets not make mountains from mole hills... keep this thread in perspective, and productive!

Mountains from mole hills? I highly doubt you'd consider it a mole hill if you'd brought your $40k+ vehicle in 5+ times for a repair and then be told it wasn't eligible for the Lemon Law because it was leaking in two different places. Hell, one time I was told I was to blame because I drove it in standing water.

I agree unsubstantiated stats are meaningless, but this is hardly a mole hill. I'm out 5k because Ford refused to fix an issue two years ago.

Hi everyone,

We're tired of going to the Dealers because 1) They can't find the leak the first try. 2) They Don't fix it right the 2nd time. 3) They don't put the vehicle back together correctly after tearing it apart. 4) It should have been corrected 2 year ago.

Stop telling us to go to the dealer and Contact Ford PD Engineer or Chicago Assembly Plant PVT Engineers and get them to fix this.

Once that is done, you won't have to waste your time responing to this thread.

Hi Ott23,

The best way for me to get information into the hands of our engineers is through case escalations. This data is valuable to determine trends and to identify solutions; the more information I can get into their hands, the better. I know that multiple service visits are frustrating, but I'm confident that your dealership is doing all they can to assist. If you need additional assistance, you can contact our Customer Relationship Center at 1-800-392-3673.

I just got back my explorer today after being in the shop since Monday. Like everyone here is reporting, they found no leak after putting it through numerous washes. It's frustrating that the issue (leak) was not resolved.
