It's about time I created a registry for my '00 Sport! It all started in October 2020 when my '97 XLT, the 97Sandbox, burned up its second 5R55E in 5 years. I tried all the fixes I could without a full trans rebuild, but ultimately couldn't get overdrive back. After a couple months of inner turmoil, I decided it was time to move on from my childhood family hauler/first car and get a manual replacement like I always wanted. For the next several months I watched online car marketplaces for manual Explorers and started accumulating parts for a build. Come July of 2021, I found a 2000 Sport in Michigan that had recently been moved up from Texas. It was virtually rust free, but had been neglected and had over 250k on the odometer...
Hello my name is Jake, im from San Diego and I own a 1997 Explorer 5.0 that has gone through a lot of changes to become what it is now. There's so much custom work on here that I've done...It's gonna take a few posts. When I got the exploder it was bone stock with no speakers or stereo and had a "bad transmission". It was free though, had a v8, 130k and was Awd so it came home with me. I deep cleaned it for about a month because the interior was a bit of a wreck The transmission problem turned out to be a transfercase leak and with the 4r70w having an open passageway to the awd tcase it was becoming low and loosing the ability to shift...or the something like that. All I know is a bw4406 swap and 5 quarts of atf solved the problem...
This 99 Explorer Sport is our 3rd one (as the title says). First one was a jewel green 94, second one was a bright amber (autumn orange) 99 we purchased new, & the current one (A 99) is vermillion red. When we got it I did a full service on it, new tires, grille guard, bug shield, vent visors, new front shocks & new rear coil assist shocks & new warrior rear shackles. I patched a small rust hole in the l/s quarter panel by the top of the wheel flare & patched both outer & inner rocker panels with new metal panels. Currently it has only 115K on the clock, when we purchased it in July of 2015 as a DD for my wife it only had 82K on it. I removed the factory side steps as they were rusted beyond repair & found a pair of steps on E Bay for a...
This is my 2003 Explorer, Centennial Edition. I found it at a tiny dealer way up in Sedro-Woolley, WA, on January 21, 2022. I was on a plane to Bellingham, WA, the morning of January 22. 4.6L, AWD, every option except the rear DVD. She had 195,000 miles when I got her, and I immediately drove her almost 1000 miles home to Sparks, NV. With some exceptional help from one of our members, I was able to determine the following... Out of the 4000 planned Centennial Edition Explorers, 3167 were built. Of those, only 304 are all-wheel drive. Of those, 272 are equipped with the 4.6L engine. This one, as optioned, is one of thirty-seven. The first set of photos are how I got her. I've been after one of these for over ten years, and now I...

I've only been an "elite" for like a day, been a member for a couple months, but I've been here reading for about half a year. I'm from northern Florida and this is my explorer. Still working on a name for her and have limitless plans for her! She's almost running like new again and I'm getting her offroad ready ever so slowly, within about a week I'll be doing a torsion bar lift and shackles. I really like this community and am thankful for how helpful everyone is and can't wait to see more of everyone else's explorers

Figured I should start a thread since this truck is starting to snowball. I bought this rolled Explorer for $400 a few months ago. This poor family owned & maintained this truck for over 20 years, before it was rolled in the hands of an 18 year old. The owner was dumbfounded when I cut out the windshield at his house & drove it home (at night) with a full face helmet! Specs: 93 XLT Auto 4x4 170,x.. on chassis Receipt from a Ford Dealership showing 60K on the new motor Receipt for a rebuilt trans showing 18K New - MAF, brake booster/master, cats & muffler The plan was to just keep it in the yard since my DD is showing it’s age at 225k. This truck runs better than any 1st gen I’ve owned (15 or so). I literally had zero plans for it...
Hey y'all! Thought I ought to get a thread going for my ride, the 97Sandbox. The nickname comes from the double mid prairie tan color scheme -- basic as can be, but hey, it hides dirt like none other. My dad bought the Explorer in 2006 from the original owner and I took ownership of the truck in 2017 (although I've been driving it since 2010). It came into our family while we were all living in Missouri, but I eventually took the '97 with me to Kansas and later to Wisconsin where it resides now. I'll kick things off with a brief history of my infatuation with Explorers, then I'll run through what I've done so far, and I plan to keep posting as I continue to modify the vehicle. Stock specs: 4.0 SOHC, 5R55E, RWD with the 3L73 rear end
This explorer started its life in Arizona, from where someone brought it to Switzerland, from there someone bought it to Finland (yeah, quite the trip), company which sells parts to American cars owned the car in Finland from where I bought it, as I needed something V8 since i used to live in America (had P71) and had grown to like the V8 sound and needed 4wd for growing family, that year was 2013, so I have had it for a while and family has grown so much the car is getting small. I have driven the car some 50-60k miles and those miles have MOSTLY been worry free. Since then I have done numerous fixes\changes to the car, replaced alternators, shocks, replaced all bushings with polyurethane, you name it, oils countless times and the...
Thanks for checking out my thread! I've owned about a dozen 1st & 2nd gen Explorers over the last 8 years. I've done Dana 44's on a 1st gen, coilovers on a 2nd gen, uniball uppers, leveling kits, lift kits, fabricated a handful of front ends, shock hoops, bedcages, the list goes on and on. For my latest truck, I began my search towards the end of last summer & actually started out looking for a 2nd gen, (I really like the ones with the AC in the center console). Thankfully this truck was not needed as a daily driver, so I was able to take my time. I happen to stumble across this extremely clean 1st gen that reminded me so much of my favorite Explorer, which was also a white 94 with black wheels. I could not pass this truck up. Here in...
Welcome to my latest build thread - this has been a project I have been planning for a few years now. This is 1994 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 2dr I’ve named Reef Bandit. It’s a Cayman Green Eddie Bauer which has always been a favorite color of mine on the Eddie Bauer. I found Reef about a year ago wasting away in a field; his title was lost and it had exchanged hands a few times. I got the vin and when we ran the uniqueness of the options of this particular vehicle, it was a 1 of 1 production. The only thing this Explorer had that none of it’s other 8 Cayman Green clones possessed was a factory JBL sound system with CD player. Overall, this is a very rare Explorer. I had to buy it. The title work was a pain but I was able...
I forget how many v8s I'm up to. The green one, the black one, the blue one, and now the grey one. I think that's all so far. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for the last year or so for an Explorer as a donor for my Bronco. I recently came across this one fairly locally. It was a 1-owner, garage-kept '97 with about 200k on the clock. Picked it up for $1300 (not bad.. not great). Problem is, now I'm having second thoughts on tearing it apart. I haven't had a 2nd gen for about 5 years and we recently got rid of my wife's '13 Explorer for an Audi Q7 (good swap really). Driving an Explorer again got me feelin' the old times and now I'm thinking about saving it as a driver. So far I've given it a good cleaning on the inside and...
