Boiling battery!

Hi Guys. I've got a 2003 Ranger XLT. While driving along today I began to notice a strange smell and, on investigation, I found steam coming from the battery. I am assuming that there is a fault on the charging control - presumably the voltage regulator. Has anyone experienced this problem before? Any ideas on the likely cause and solution?

what is the voltage when running and not running?

Voltage was 17 from the alternator. Seems that the voltage regulator has failed. New alternator and battery required. The battery made quite an interesting smell...........
