Help! PLASTIC LIFTER CAP HELP!!!!

Well i was doing a cam swap on my 94 explorer. I pulled the little plastic caps off the lifters, well guess what there way to brittle and old to put back on with out breaking and you cant buy them with out lifters. I dont want to go spend like 350-400 bucks on new lifters i could buy a 302 for that. so i was just wondering if i can run them with out the little plastic caps on the top of the lifters Thanks guys.

on the top of the lifter there is a cone shaped piece of plastic that clips onto to lifter.

I have some lifters here (from my old spare engine) but I don't think the plastic caps would survive(sp?) shipping as they are also brittle (355k miles on them)..

I don't have any idea if you can run without them as I've never tried but I doubt it..
