I finally found some second gen taillight guards. I was going to purchase the Black Horse brand but I found these for $89.

They look great and were apparently packaged in 2001, judging from the newspaper they were wrapped in.

They were made by a company that doesn’t appear on google, so probably long gone.

I’ll try to install them this weekend. I’m slowly completing the look I have planned for my 2000. It just needs a 5.0 now. Soon I hope.

Cool find...
I noticed by your profile your Explorer is a one in a million XLT with the (bullet proof) OHV engine....especially at year 2000 which was the last year they offered those on ANY Explorer trims....mainly only on the XL and XLS trims from 98 -2000.

Yes the dependable OHV. Mine overheated at 200,000 miles after the heater hose broke. It didn’t start burning coolant till 250,000 miles, then I finally replaced the heads. It’s a great little engine. I’ll miss it when I swap in a 5.0. It must have been chosen by the original owner. Since the truck has very specific options.

Trust me, you will not miss the 4.0L OHV one bit once you swap in a 5.0L V8.

I’ll miss the unique sound that the OHV makes at idle but that’s about it. The V8 and AWD will be a huge improvement. Hardest part will be finding a qualified place that can do it, as the swap is beyond me.

Black Horse is the only company I know of that still makes guards for second gen explorers. They go for $130 on eBay but I think summit offers them for $100.
