Tiny air intake on 3rd gen

I replaced my air filter on my "new" 04 last week and couldn't believe how small the stock air intake tube going into the airbox was. The tube is reasonable diameter but they have it going right up against the back of the headlight housing and the only open part is a small portion at the topof the tube where it doesn't fully contact the headlight assembly. The cross sectional area can't be more than a couple square inches. Anyone enlarged this for better breathing? How about running a cold-air intake (dryer tube) from this intake pipe down to the front air dam?

thats your airbox silencer, remove it, and some have done some ducting work

I cut the front of the box,removed the cone and drop a K&N filter.I do feel a differents in throttle reponse.
