IAT = Intake Air Temperature

It has been monitored on several vehicles (including my own) that at speeds over 45 mph, the IAT (for me anyways) was dead on with the outside temperature. This was with an open aftermarket intake, not the stock setup. I cannot speak for the stock setup as I have not measured temps in that setup.
 






Well that sounds better than dead on with the air temp in the engine bay
 






i posted this before and everyone said it would draw water in, but this mod would seem to bring in more water but it seems fine. what do you guys think of this.

I have a KKM type intake (ebay adapter) I built a heat shield out of Lexan and mounted it to where it would block hot air from the engine. I also then bought a connector from pep boys and connected a tube from the open top of my intake to a mount amounted on the side of the fenderwell like a 5.0 mustang has. (Sucks air from the fender

Second image shows heat shield bolted up.
Does it do anything? Spindle doesnt think so...I beg to differ. Blocking hot air from the engine and sucking air out of the fender well seems like a better idea then just a filter sitting there sucking whatever.
 






Is a great looking Mod AF, nicly done,I just wish we could get some numbers,before and after.
How did you attach the ducting to the filter?
 






My only question about your intake afboy: Wouldn't it be more effective if your intake did not draw off the sides of the filter cone? I would think that it would draw a lot of air from the engine bay still.

I agree with you as well as millions of other's out there.

I would say yes and no. Here is my theory and thought process

I have done the heat shield so when you close the hood, the heatshield blocks most of the heat coming from the engine (reason I say most is because there are notches in places where I had to run wires or what not and heat can get thru there.) I didnt do the shield on the rear by the wiper fluid res because its pretty much blocked off by the plastic res tanks. I didnt make a "Volant" type box because I still wanted fresh air to from into it from behind the headlight grill as well as suck fender air which has been untouched by engine heat and is circulated from under the truck/tire well. 5.0 mustangs I believe are sealed all the way to the firewall like you are talking about but I didnt want to do all that.

Spindle, Pep boys sells a lot of stuff to make your own intake (Spectre brand). There is an actual adapter made to fit ontop of the filter to connect a hose to. We have the same filter so maybe you can fit your ram air hose from your fog onto this adapter and make it true rather than just blowing onto the filter?

Again there is no scientific data backing up my thinking. Its just common sense along with ideas stolen from larger companies that Im sure did somekind of testing to prove.

Nothing really, I am going on the concept of "air is everywhere"

This looks good to me. I think you're right in your way of thinking but.....

Get the air from the font of the vehicle if you want to see a true gain. Trust me on this. You can run the line from the front to underneath where you're filter is located. You can cut a 3.5" hole there without any problem. Just make sure you feel under there and miss the vacuum canister. You have to take it slow and have a good drill but it can be done. Use the spectre 3.0" flexible tubing.
 






Before I bought a K&N FIPK for my OHV 4.0, I took the stock box and cut the 4 sides out so it is completely open all around from the bottom of the filter to the bottom of the box. I left enough on the corners so it would still be strong enough. I noticed an immidiate change in the intake sound when I got on the throttle. I added a K&N filter at the same time to allow better airflow through the open box. I just like the look of the K&N FIPK over the stock one, and I got it for 190.00 on ebay.
