I see some trucks that have tires that are sticking out from the body of the truck. I think this looks kinda cool, as my other buddies have lift kits with bug tires. I am thinking of going this way (wider tires) but I don’t know how to find them. (What they are called). Also is there anything bad with going wider? Paint chipping... gas mileage... etc.

Thanks.

If you go too wide the tires will rub on the air dam below the bummper and the plastic side molding behind the tire.

Does anyone have any pics of wider tires of there explorer. I have a 00 XLS. Let me know

I'll take some as soon as I get home from work.

utah, those are nice tires, what are the size of them? Also, have you noticed if there is any chipped paint from having those tires throw up rocks?

I got these 4 tires for $100 CA :D, friend had them on the new wheels he bought for hist truck. There 275/60/r15 which is just a tad wider than the 235/75/r15's that were on before :p.

There 31x10.5x15 on 15x8 wheels. No chip paint either.

here are some pics of my 91 on 31X10.50XR15 Uniroyal Liberators (good dirt tires, btw)
It hurt accelleration and braking quite a bit, but it was also on 215/75/R15's to start. It's much more stable now and a brakestand is the only way these things break loose on the pavement now. Still does those easily, however.

and this is where they rub the sway bar on the driver side. it only happens at full turn, and i have front end damage from the previous owners, so it may not be a problem for yours.

hope this helps

I'm rockin' 255/70-15 Cooper Cobras. They look about 1.5" wider than the stock 235/75-15s. They're only about a .25" taller, so my speedo isn't affected much. The X has a really aggressive looke right now. I'll try to snap some pics sometime today.

fat tires in winter up here in Canada aren't the best things, they tend to float a lot more on slush and you spread the weight of the vehicle on ice, which isn't the best thing, in winter, thinner is better, especially at high speeds. just something to think about.
