Possible to Purchase Explorer Sport Rims?

Anyone know of some forged rims that look similar to the stockers?
I like the way they look but would like to lose 10+ lbs off of em.

Why did you need the spares, you going to run 20" Snows?

My explorer came with the summer performance continentals.... I dont wanna keep mounting and dismounting them when the winter comes... So i found a spare set of factory rims to mount all weather tires on for the winter mOnths....

I personally feel aftermarket wheels look cheap, tacky and overdone.....i can probably count on one hand the number of aftermarket rims ive seen and actually liked...Just me opinion...

Why would you use all weather tires for Winter? They are basically just 3 season tires and Winter isn't one of them. Those tires begin to lose optimum grip at just 43 degrees F. As the temp drops the rubber becomes harder. Winter tires will reduce your stopping distance by up to 30% because of a different, more pliable compound. If you are going with all seasons you may as well keep the Continentals on and save the money.

The problem with All-Season tires is they don't work. The don't do anything well.

I will run a Blizzak 265-60-18 (same ride hieght as the stock 20s), have used Blizzaks for years and on this truck, it should go through anything and more importantly, stop on the snow as these SPORTS are heavy.

I binned the stock tires and went with the BFG KDWs and very happy with them for summer rubber.

first let me say that im a ford dealer senior master technician (17 yrs)...I know all about tires...not bragging, but I know all about rubber...you can spare me the scientific breakdown of how rubber reacts to temperature, etc..etc... you ever try to drive with a summer performance tire in the snow???....4x4 or not youre not gonna stop, steer or go..its a nightmare....so keeping these contis on thru the winter is a definite NO...you couldn't use them based on tread design alone...never mind rubber compound! they might as well be bald...lol... we have NEVER used a dedicated winter tire on any of our vehicles and do just fine.... we have an 07 edge that has never seen a winter tire....and have total confidence driving thru winter on an all season.... we saw 41in of snow here in a 24 hr period last February (CT).... no sweat ....

I've always used all seasons in the snow and they work pretty well. Not as good as winter tires I'm sure but good enough. Like thePUNISHER said the summer tires will not work in the snow at all.

I have been driving for 50 years and only began using 4 dedicated Winter tires about 12 years ago. I agree that all season tires can do a decent job in the snow but people forget that many times they are driving on just cold bare roads. This is where the softer rubber compound proves its worth in stopping and handling. The bottom line is that while an all season may do the job, it cannot match a dedicated Winter tire in overall performance and safety in all Winter conditions. That is one reason why many insurance companies now offer discounts on premiums for using Winter tires and the province of Quebec has made them mandatory.

My KDWs will be useless in cold Temps, let alone winter, so picked up a set of these today!

We don't get a lot of snow in Toronto, but when we do the SPORT will not be stopped...:D

Sport looks nasty with those KDW's.

"Good enough" until the time don't have an extra 30 feet to stop.
Just have to drive extra carefully and they plow very quickly here in NY so that helps. Plus I dont have to drive in snow very much like those guys up in Canada lol.

You forget though that biggest advantage of Winter tires is traction on cold bare roads where, unlike all seasons, the rubber remains more pliable. The all seasons begin to stiffen up at 43 degrees F. That is the big misconception between the two tires. Many people still refer to them incorrectly as 'snow' tires and only look at that performance. There is a reason they are now called 'Winter' tires.

These are the wheels my wife decided she liked better than the $800 OEM wheels. Moda M14. The largest size is 18" though, but that's as big as she wanted anyway. $134 ea

Tire Rack technician says the MD14 will not fit the Explorer. It won't clear the brakes and suspension pieces.

Dang. That is a good looking wheel and very close to the Sport wheel design.

This is what is being considered for a set of 18" wheels to mount some snow tires, Moda MD15's. They will work on the Explorer and still priced at $134 for the wheel. Will need to add $147.96 for a set of four Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors (TPMS).

There is a reason they are now called 'Winter' tires.

Our friends in the Great White North forget that further south, All Season tires are far more acceptable, even in the New England states. If I ran dedicated Winter tires, I'd burn through them (literally) in a season or two. Roads stay too warm, there isn't enough snow, and the season is too short.

Lol, we get almost no snow at all in Toronto, Buffalo gets is all off the lakes. LOL
But we do get two or three dumps a winter and for those days, LOVE my Blizzaks!

What many of our friends in the fine USA forget is how far SOUTH Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area is, much farther south, than many of the US States.

As for the debate about All-Seasons, there isn't one; to properly outfit a car for winter, snow tires are optimum and for quiet performance in the summer, a summer tire it the best, ALL-Season tires are a compromise.

Change wheel

I really like the wheels on the Explorer sport. My limited came with the polished aluminum 20" wheels. Any suggestions on how I can swap these for the straight spoke alloy design at additional "minimum" cost?

Are you talking about getting the Sport wheels? Check out the other posts in this thread.

Yes the ones that come with the Sport version

I like the after market wheels (Eg: Moda ) but concerned if they are appropriate for my vehicle. Has anyone heard of wheels breaking up while the vehicle is on the road? I would presume that when Ford designed the OEM wheels they took into consideration usage, vehicle class, weights etc and came up with that design. It might appear heavy but perhaps its already optimized and that material is necessary. Why risk going for aftermarket when we have no clue if we are taking additional risk or reduced factor of safety against a catastrophic failure of the wheels, say at reasonable speeds encountering a pothole while fully loaded? I know some of you would be tempted to say, the chassis components, struts, springs etc would likely break up before the tires/ alloy wheels collapse as the loads increase to a critical point.. but do we know that for sure?

I dont particulary like the 20" polished Aluminum wheels that came with my Explorer and would like to swap these for the ones that come with the Sport.. if there is anyone who has a Sport and likes the polished aluminum wheels better as much, that would be ideal.. we could just swap.. and my added cost would be shipping one way
