Fortunately this happened after I'd filled up with juice, so I've a few mile to go before it becomes critical>>>>>.....
The fuel cap on my 1997 ford explorer has broken!
The cap is the locking type and is not the screwed version.
It appears to be in two halves and the top has parted from the piece that fits into the fuel tank inlet pipe.
This piece is now stuck in the pipe.
A. How does this piece come out when the top bit(which has the key in it) has broken off?
Is this fixable or do I need a new fuel cap?
Thanks

A new filler cap would be your easiest fix. But you still need to remove the broken part.

If it gets real tough, you should be able to disconnect the fuel filler tube from the fuel filler hose. You might have to unbolt the plastic surround piece behind the fuel cap. With the fuel filler tube removed, this should be far easier. Or you could replace the fuel filler tube from salvage or maybe internet course. The fuel filler tubes do get some rust, and maybe you can address that during this process. Just some thoughts….

Good luck!

Is it as simple as just buying another fuel cap?

Looks like you got it out. Never seen it inside that before but it looks like downward pressure and turn anti clockwise to remove the inner cap part. Needle nose pliers?

I'd get a new cap. Amazon or ebay?

Yes! It could be if I can get one.
Best ones seem to be in USA - just has a time constraint!

You're right, I'll try Amazon
thanks
Can you get a temporary one from a breaker?
It's difficult where I live - ebay is probably best bet

I would just Gorilla glue it all together so it is one piece, and lose the locking feature until you buy a replacement cap…

My previous Stant locking gas cap had started having issues with the key. Not too long after, the key would not work. I can’t remember if I somehow got the key to finally work, or if I just broke the top off, and turned the base out. Now, if there are any slight signs of any problems, I get a new one ASAP. I tossed my old OEM non-locking cap in the cubby by the jack, so I put that one on to get by.

Good idea, didn't know I could do that.
I can't get a good replacement but I have some item ordered and I'll have to wait for it to arrive to see if it's OK. Did this repair so I could use my explorer, the fuel tank was fuel and I didn't want gas spilling out of I used it without the cap!

Another temporary option would be to go to local gas stations, tell them you might have left your gas cap on top of the pump the last time you were there, and see if they have a “Lost and Found” box of abandoned caps. Might luck out and find one that will get you by…

Or..... I could try main dealer spares and see if they can get one...!
