Neutral switch adjustment- 1995 explorer 4 door.
I replaced my Neutral switch a few ago. This year I noticed the reverse lights did not come on. So this year I made sure the alignment marks on the Neutral switch, where in alignment. Backup lights were illuminated. Now they are not. So today I adjusted the neutral switch again. The problem is when I place the car in park, then into reverse the backup light do not come on. I checked and wiggle the connector, wiring harness; no effect. Can these neutral switch fail that easy?

5r?

Do you have a worn bushings causing a lash issue were it’s not the same going from park the same as it is coming from neutral?

The gold torx bolts that hold the shifter mechanism both tight?

Yea that year doesn’t have a 5R trans…

Since you just edited it without correction, you have a 4r55e transmission, for the record.

the neutral safety / digital trans range sensor is on the side of the trans

It is the same part 4r and 5r

The wiring for the reverse lights goes through this switxh, the column shifter is what moves it’s positions

I would test the reverse light wiring at the trans switch, that is as long as your 95 has two hood reverse bulbs and sockets. The sockets inside the tail lights have been knows to corrode over time

You can check the alignment of the neutral switch at the side of the trans, the column shift cable is adjustable

Yes the nss does wear out, it is an electrical switch,
Don’t replace it until after you test it

I get the reverse light too light.
Tighten the bolts ( lights still illuminating).
Put in park ,then back too reverse. no lights.
?

The dtrs/nss is adjusted with the trans in n and the column shifter in n
The dtrs has slotted screws, the dtrs has a n arrow indicating the n position.

So loosen the shifter cable at the transmission adjuster (white plastic cable lock)

So with column shifter in n
Trans in n
Adjust dtrs to “n” and tighten screws
Adjust shifter cable and “latch” cable adjuster

Now you have aligned your column shift dtrs and trans.
Any looseness in the column shifter should be fixed and the little gear orange indicator can be adjusted

I believe its a bad switch. I dId everything mention above.

Then I would replace the switch.

Next would be to check the power going into the dtrs
