explorer, mountaineer, and now the aviator

    1. With enough money and a big shoehorn, anything is possible. But for practical purposes, no. The Modular motors are in a 90 degree V configuration, and with the cams on top of the cylinder heads, a measly 281 cid engine ends up being as wide as a Boss 429! 2. Well, it's a Modular V8, so...

Is this 'Aztec' thing for April Fools Day?

This is becoming a yearly tradition I see. Last year's April Fools theme was the Pinto. My question is, which one is worse? :D

Explorer V-8 - What is the 1st year it was put in?

THe 5.0 is the old Windsor engine that's been around since 1962 in various displacements. It's your typical pushrod engine with an in-block cam. The 4.6 is a relatively new engine that was the first of Ford's Modular V8 family. It's an overhead cam design, meaning no lifters or pushrods. The...

    Is this the torsion bar

Sorry pal, that isn't it. That looks like a sway bar end link. The torsion bar runs parallel to the frame(it's horizontal, not vertical like the end link) from a bracket near the transmission crossmember to the A-arm.

    Why PIAA?

Talk about good customer service! I had a similarly pleasant experience about this time last year. I got a set of lights for my birthday, and went to put them on the following weekend. Spent the whole day trying to figure out why the damn things didn't work. Shortly before dark, I found...

    Ford to build GT40!!

   When I first saw the pics of the new GT 40 on BON, I was like, "No way Ford will build that thing. It's too cool. DCX is the only company that builds image cars anymore." I really hope they actually do it. Seeing the "Powered by Ford" logo on the valve (cam?) covers...

    "Binding" Rear Seatbelt Straps???

That's totally normal. Only the driver's belt unlocks without fully retracting. There is no problem. That's just the way it works.

    Flowmaster Question?

When I had mine done, they had to do exactly what you're talking about. It has worked fine for me. As I'm sure you're aware, down low, our SOHCs aren't exactly stump-pulling torque-monsters. Going above 2.5 inches for the tailpipe will only kill low end torque, and the miniscule amount of...

    Exhaust Question

I'm with jsdean on the gas mileage thing. You may see some improvement if you're able to drive it the exact same way you did before the exhaust, but let's face it, the sound if half of what everyone looks for. Once you get that sound, it's kinda hard to stay out of the loud pedal. :D...

diamond headlight conversion, check this out..

Those diamond headlight conversions are relatively popular for F150s and Rangers. Problem with that website is, those are most definitely not made for Explorers. Just look at the pic. Also, look at the years. 93-97 were the years that the Ranger frontend remained constant. The Explorer had...

    What engine do you want?

Personally, my vote would be for a 351W (5.8L) that's been bored and stroked to 427 cubic inches by Coast High Performance. I mean how does it get any better than that? Big block displacement in a small-block package that's only like 2 inches wider and taller than the 5.0L that came stock in...

    parreli scorpion a/t's

I've got a set in the stock size (255/70R16) on my 98. I got them to replace the Firestones last Spring. Traction is excellent in dry conditions, very good in the rain, and decent in snow and ice. I haven't tried them off-road. It's tough to lose traction, even when you're trying. Also...

    New Explorer Sport?

Todd_c, I don't know the numbers, but I'd be willing to bet that the last-gen T-bird never had the sheer sales volume that the Explorer has. That can go a long way towards making parts like the IRS more cost-effective. As far as the life cycle of the current Sport, it would seem to make...

    Rewiring 550s to High Beam?

I don't know if it will be exactly the same for your Hellas, but on my PIAAs, I simply hooked the switch power wire to the green high beam wire. I didn't have a wiring diagram, so I just used a tester with the high beams on and off to isolate the wire. Then I just leace the switch in the on...

new guy with pics of his X

Nice (if somewhat familiar-looking) truck! It could pass for a twin for my '98. :D

    flowmaster

I've got the non-Delta 50 series on my 98 Sport. Even the non-Delta is still a little too quiet for my taste. The in-cabin resonance is annoying on long highway trips, which I take almost every weekend, but it's worth it the rest of the time. If I had it to do again, I woulda gone 40 series...

    Putting on a GT emblem

Not to step on any toes, but isn't the point of modifying your car or truck to make it something individualized, something that the factory didn't make? From that perspective, I think it's fine to add your GT badge. However, I believe the cardinal rule of appearance mods is "Never make...

    headers????

FRPP stands for Ford Racing Performance Parts. They are likely the same headers mentioned above.

SOHC performance products, the lack of

I think now that the Ranger is getting the SOHC we will see more parts come out for it. I mean most of the time, when you mention trying to make an Explorer go faster or handle better, on-road or off, even fellow car guys kinda look at you like you have a third eye. However, the Ranger is...

    Flowmaster Resonance?

CougarX, I had everything after the cats replaced when I got mine installed. It's not loud at all at idle, which is unfortunate. I drove home from school today, and I discovered that at about 85, the drone isn't so bad anymore. :) On a kind of side note, I have heard that the length of...

    Flowmaster Resonance?

I don't have the V8, but I felt the need to contribute... I haven't done a whole lot of highway driving since I got my 50 SUV put on over the summer. I just brought my car back to school with me last weekend, and I took a trip up to my gf's college just yesterday. When you have the stereo...

    What do you think?

Height-wise you will be okay with a 31, but going that wide is gonna cause you a lot of problems I would bet. Tons of unnecessary stress on all the suspension parts. Plus the wheels would have to be really wide like adambone said, which is gonna put them like halfway outside the wheel well...

    Flowmaster 40 series

What about cars that come from the factory with forward-exit exhausts like Cobra Rs or Vipers? How do they get around it? Or is that what you were talking about with exiting behind the passenger cabin?

    Ranger FX4

The point isn't that it is awesome in and of itself- it's the idea that the factory is finally listening to enthusiasts (occassionally) and making more specialized vehicles. Basically, the exciting part is that it is a step in the right direction.

    Ranger FX4

I saw that article this morning, I think it's great that Ford is finally catering to the off-road community, even just a little bit. I may have missed it, but did the article say when it would be available? I am most certainly looking forward to it. Looks like Ford is finally listening to the...
