    V8 Engine Swap

Ok, I'll bite. 1. So is removing the fan as simple as removing the four bolts? Will the fan slide out from there? I think I can get to the crank pulley from the bottom w/o removing the fan shroud (unless it needs to be removed to get the fan out). 2. I don't know how to loosen the belt...

    V8 Engine Swap

I have Ford wires with 46k miles on them. I replaced them at 50k because 5 of them went bad. It made no difference in the pinging. I have new Ford spark plugs. A year ago I put in new Ford O2 sensors and a Ford fuel filter. Cleaned my MAF and IAC again yesterday. I'm fairly well convinced...

    V8 Engine Swap

Jon, Is it possible to explain to me how to check this? I'm happy to do it if I know how.

    V8 Engine Swap

I am shocked to hear that considering many of the owners in the "stock" forum have this issue (assuming they use regular unleaded fuel) and nobody seems to be able to solve it once and for all. It seems to be a given for this motor. [EDIT] Don, I just noticed you had a similar problem back on...

    V8 Engine Swap

I have been, but you're not bugging me. I appreciate the effort. But I've given up on "fixing" it and have decided to either replace the engine or perhaps mod the heck out of it to where the old "demons" will go away. Seems like the cylinder heads might be a good place to start. Are there...

    V8 Engine Swap

Yep. It's more affected by the time of year than the temperature so I think it has to do with the change in gasoline formulation for the "winter" period. Burning higher octane fuel in a low-compression engine releases more pollutants and unburned fuel into the exhaust (and thus into the EGR).

    V8 Engine Swap

Sure, but why should I have to? Besides, if I do that, the EGR will crud up and it will eventually start pinging on 93 octane anyway. I have a friend with the exact same vehicle in that very predicament.

    V8 Engine Swap

No, it has 96,000 and it has pinged (mainly in the winter) since before 10,000 miles. Ford always said nothing was wrong and that I should try a different brand of gas. It pings when cruising at highway speeds. No, it is not an exhaust leak.

    V8 Engine Swap

I appreciate the insight, but I'm skeptical that these things would have occurred prior to 10,000 miles. Anyway, I wouldn't know where to start to check on these items.

    V8 Engine Swap

Yes, higher octane fuel stops it. But it's not supposed to need higher octane fuel. That's what's frustrating. I've changed the EGR valve, DPFE sensor, cleaned the MAF, cleaned the IAC valve, Sea-Foamed it to death, etc. etc. It has done this since before it had 10,000 miles. Now it has...

    V8 Engine Swap

Primarily because I'm tired of hearing it ping all winter every year.

    V8 Engine Swap

Fine, forget the GM motor. How about a 4.6L 3V?

    V8 Engine Swap

Can a new small block GM engine (e.g. 5300 or LS2) be easily mated up to the Ford transmission in my 1999 5.0L Mountaineer? How about the latest 4.6L 3V modular Ford engine? Thanks.

    Brake Job Basics

Why are they on the front rotors and not the rear? Also, when I pull the front rotors, does it expose the bearings?
  15. R

    still pinging under a load.

I haven't found a magic solution either. I just Sea Foam periodically (once per year) and always run 87 octane.

    Brake Job Basics

I'm planning to do the brakes on my 99 Mountaineer. Last time I checked, getting the rear rotors off looked fairly straightforward. But the fronts have some kind of retainer clips on the lugs. Is there a trick or tool for removing and installing these clips? Should I order new ones for the...

    still pinging under a load.

I did that as well. The pinging will be back in less than a year.

    Best Street Tire

Another for Michelin LTX M/S. I'm on my second set (since the original Firestone's). The AT's (All Terrain) will be rougher on the street.

    Loose PCV Valve on '99 5.0L ?

How do you get the full part# from that? I only see 6A892?

1999 Moutaineer 5.0 Slow to Start - Need Help

Anyone? Is this an ignition issue of some sort? UPDATE: Well, I cleaned the IAC valve and replaced the upstream O2 sensors at the same time (was planning on that anyway), and one of those two items fixed the problem. Not sure which. I'm hoping for MPG improvement with the O2 sensors as well.

    Loose PCV Valve on '99 5.0L ?

I should clarify. The PCV valve fits tight in the grommet. But the grommet just slides in and out of the lower intake manifold very easily. Not sure if that makes a difference. Anyone have a part# for the grommet for a '99 5.0L?

    Loose PCV Valve on '99 5.0L ?

I just pulled the PCV valve on my motor and it came out of the lower intake with no resistance at all. It's basically just sitting in the hole. Is that right or should there be a tighter seal?

    1999 5.0L Build-up

I have to admit, I'm a little hesitant because I've been down this road twice already with no noticeable results. First was the FMS headers I put on my '94 Mustang GT. Zippo results. Yes, I know . . . don't use FMS. Second was the new exhaust manifolds I installed on my boat (a 454ci MPI...

    1999 5.0L Build-up

I would love to do the install if I was confident I could pull it off. I have no problem with scraping my knuckles (or my arms, or my face, or my . . . well maybe not that) but I saw at least two things in one of the how-to threads that bothered me. (1) unbolting the drive-shaft and (2)...
