02 Explorer broken rear coil springs?

No mine is a V6 xls with only the class 2 hitch & 4 prong plug.

FYI- rockauto.com sells replacement springs as a pair that are half of the cost of autozone & advanced auto parts sells them here. I can get a pair for $100 + shipping online, and they are 115 each at Autozone.

Does anyone have any tips for how to get the rear strut clear of the lower control arm? I unbolted the rear sway bar and the rear knuckle, but the arm would not move enough to let the strut drop out.

My drivers side rear spring broke one coil up from the bottom.
Anyone have a good aftermarket part number for these defective pieces?
thanks...........

When mine broke, I used Monroe Quick Struts. It was EASY!!!

Loosen the control arm bushings and jack the frame and let the wheels hang down. When you're done, DON'T TIGHTEN THE CONTROL ARMS UNTIL THE VEHICLE'S WEIGHT IS ON THE WHEELS. Otherwise, your bushings will fail prematurely.

I just replaced my rear coils & all 4 struts. To get the struts out I unbolted the spindle from the lower control arm & then used my foot to push the lower arm down for room.

I just did front hubs and rear brake pads on my dads 02, V6, tow package Explorer and found his drivers spring broken up top in about 5 places. What a junk part and bad situation for Ford. Im surprised there are not more lawsuits for people flipping their exploders.....

I just bought two Moog springs at Advanced Auto for $112 for the pair. I think someone quoted you wrong.

i have 2002 mercury mountineer and both of my rear springs boke about one coil off the bottom and on the driver side 2 coils broke from the top

2 rear coils broke on mine as well. Ordered new struts with springs ready to bolt in.

broken rear coil spring

just went to inspect my truck today for leaks and guess what, a broken coil spring. Now I got the famous ford designed part broken, expecting the other parts to do the same.

I don't think I would go OEM on this one if this is the same cheapo parts.

Any advice on good coil or struts assembly out there?

here's the pic anyway.. didn't notice any major problems with the ride or driveability though.

Since you found a simple way of doing it, please post a writeup on how you did it with pictures...maybe start a new thread with the title of "How to: replace the rear coil springs on a 2002-2005 ford explorer" or something like that.

Yes, please post how you did it. I need to tackle this job, but can't get the spring/strut out. I was able to get the three top nuts off and the bolt from the bottom of the strut, but could not get the spring out once everything was loose. Do you need to loosen other parts in order to remove the spring? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had some time yesterday so I decide to replace both broken rear coil springs in my 02 XLT 4.0. It wasn't too bad of a job. The hardest part was getting at the 3 studs on top of the shock/spring mount. I ended up removing the spare tire from underneath and accessing them from there. Both springs were worse than I thought. They were broken in numerous places. In my opinion they were probably not heat treated correctly and ende up too brittle. Anyway it's back together and rides like new. Springs were $85 each at the dealer.
