04 Sport Trac Questions

My first post here. Im looking at a 04 Sport Trac and have a couple questions.

Its 2wd XLT 4.0 4.10 open rear end drum brakes

I thought in 04 it would have rear discs?

The rear end is howling, so bad I told the seller to be cautious about driving it.

Is this bearings, gears, or both?

Do I rebuild the rear end or find a suitable replacement in a salvage yard?

I would prefer 3.73 gears anyway.

Should I pass on this one and find one without the rear end problem?

Its low miles, nice condition, and priced at 5k.

Match the VIN on top of the the dashboard and door pillar decal, click minor features, and go from there. Possibly a salvage title?

I passed on this one. Im still looking.

I want to spend 5k. Lots available in that price range.

Good choice passing on it. Chances are if they were still driving with a bad rear end, who knows what else they let go in the maintenance department.
