Hi,
Mounty has been running perfectly, 95k miles on it. I just put gas in it - Exxon Premium (I always run premium, and use this station frequently). Also, the battery is only a couple of months old.

drove home from getting gas (normal - no problems) yesterday.

Today, car does not start.

It turns over just fine, but does not start. I moved the shifter through the gears and back to park, and the car started (I thought that was the problem),but within a couple of seconds it ran roughly and died. Now it does not restart.

I pulled the pass kick panel off, and tested the wiring at the inertia switch, and one side was hot with the key on.

I do not know where the fuel pump relay or fuse is located, and I could not find a thread with that info in searching this site,

I changed the fuel filter recently - maybe two months ago. I am about to go get another filter and replace it again, just to make sure it did not clog, or I did not install it backwards, or something. (I am not sure if installing it backwards would matter that much...)

I also don't hear the fuel pump priming, but I am not sure I really ever heard it in the Mounty (although my wife usually drives it).

Also - I have a scanner, no codes.

Advice?

I think you should hear the pump priming. Check the fuel pump relay or fuse. Swap it with same relay from another location. Bang at the fuel tank with a rubber mallet.

Thanks - I am thinking fuel pump as well. I may be cutting a hole in the pass floorboard...

Can you tell me where that relay is located? I cannot find that information in a search Thanks for your help

It's in the fuse box under the hood. I would need to get the owners manual from the car. I remember pulling it out when I was doing the filter, and I just took it out and started the engine to relieve the pressure. Can you check your manual ? It's probably the same, but mine is 06.

Owners manual says relay #4 fuel pump, injectors. 30 amp relay.

Completed the pump replacement today. Basically following the "redneck" fuel pump replacement thread.

it really was not a very difficult job, but it was very time-consuming because I chose to pull the seats and push the carpeting out of the way rather than cut it. Also I spent quite a while vacuuming eight years of crud off of the floor with the pass front & rear seats removed before I put them back. But that technically doesn't count as repair time. LOL

I've taken seats out of a number of cars and let me tell you these seats are some stout (heavy) SOBs.

I have some pics, but I cannot figure out how to post photos, at least using an iPad. I will log in later on my laptop and see if I can figure it out with a different device

So did that fix your no-start problem?

Yes - runs beautifully and starts as it did before. I don't have any experience with fuel pumps failing, but I am surprised that there was no warning, although that is probably the norm... Thankfully it failed in the driveway, and not on the freeway or a parking lot somewhere

This is the area where the fuel pump is located. It's basically the passenger side second row floorboard. The area between the front seat & the second

Another view of the floor. You can see spot welds at the top (towards the front seats), as well as spot welds to the right (towards the doors) – these indicate areas where additional bracIng or overlapping panels exist. I tried not to cut into these areas, as I didn't want to weaken the structure. There is plenty of room without cutting into the areas where the panels overlap.

Can somebody tell me how to post the actual photo, please? I cannot figure it out.

You seem to have to use either PhotoBucket or equivalent and paste the link into the image tool in the bar above. Several are offered and you see the one that works from Photobucket. Its archaic not to have image pasting in this day and age of Terabyte Hard drives

Pumps don't seem to fail too often. I know there was a common issue some time back in GM ASTROVAN's which I had. I most vehicles with in tank pumps the gas is used as a coolant. Running the tank low was suppose to be causing the regular failure of the pumps in them. I notice the Low Fuel in the Explorer flags at 1/4 tank. A lot high than any other vehicle I know. This can be a good thing but something to keep in mind if in fact it has the same effect on running regularly to very low in the gas tank.

I don't know if your vehicle experienced that but good to assess a viable reason other than age which isn't the case hear.
