anyone who uses acetone or toluene in a daily driver is a moron..i work with acetone every day of my life. i work with fibreglass and we use it to clean sticky ass resin up. does anyone realize that carburetors or fuel injection have RUBBER and PLASTIC parts on them? what are fuel ines made of? huh? think about it....acetone will eat through almost anything given it has enough time to do so...adding even an incorrect mixture of acetone to your gas will probably over time eat crap up!...take a piece of plastic and stick it in acetone...what happens?..exactly....it melted didnt it! i personally wouldnt do it..anyone who does it...good luck in the long run with your motor!
Depends on the plastic. Guess what.... acetone is sold in plastic bottles. Its called fingernail polish remover. Ive never seen it eat through the little plastic bottles in the middle of WalMart. Either way, its only 4 ounces in 20 gallons of fuel. You could DRINK acetone if it were mixed 4 oz. per 20 gallons of water.

I still dont think it really does anything, but what the hell im still trying it. :)

Especially if you freely admit that you're a 21yr old SoCal pothead

Spindlecone gets 196 mpg and 36 rwhp

No james t, your the moron. I have used acetone in my X sence the day I bought it, and have never had it destroy any of the rubber seals or gaskets. I have also used it in all my vehicles for over twenty years and have never had a problems.

James T didn't call anybody a moron :p

OK I would like to put my .02 in about acetone. I have been using the stuff for a while in several applications, including organic chemistry classes in college, making surfboards, using it in my explorer, and now, getting my Masters in Biomedical Science. Benner31 has it all wrong in that most of his knowledge of acetone most likely comes from working on surfboards no doubt (being from So Cal and being a stoner). Surfboards, however, are made out of fiberglass and polyester resin or epoxy. RESIN is indeed soluable (able to be dissolved) by acetone, but I really don't think there is a single bit of resin or epoxy within a car. Seconly, the acetone that I work with in lab, is 100% acetone, unlike the kind you usually find in nail polish remover, which is usually diluted a bit and mixed with other stuff. Despite being concentrated 100% acetone, the labs I have worked in use plastic squeeze bottles to hold and spray the stuff and I have never seen it dry out or eat through any of the plasticware. Oh one other thing. If this concentrated acetone can't eat through a plastic bottle than I doubt that a 2oz / 10gallon mixture will have any adverse effects what-so-ever.

-Thanks

I agree bwinterroth, but the MPG question is still unanswered. Pending...

I think you got some names mixed up somewere..... ive said repeatedly that there is no way it would harm anything in the fuel system mixed at such a small ratio. I will not deny the moron part, but ive been defending the safety of its use and never said it would hurt a thing. :)

Edit- that first line in the quote is sigworthy if anyone wants it. :p

There was a link, somewhere, about this topic. The guy put a bunch of rubber components in a mixture of gas and acetone and saw nothing.
