The caliper is close to the front of the rim or the sides? I don't know if they kind of "upgraded" the brakes for the newer explorers, but I'd say they fit. But the best way to find out -- get a 15" wheel...put it on there and spin it....and listen for any noise.
If the offset is right, you can put 15's on there just fine. Currently I have 15's with 31 inch bfg's. The first set of 15's they put on were all wrong and the calipers made a nice ring around the inside of the wheel, but the ones I have now are perfectly fine.. Oh and I have an 03 Sport..
